The Agriculture Department announces the second half of the Soil Bank program, detailing the Conservation Reserve. The reserve will place cropland into a long term bank for 3 to 15 years with two payment types, sharing the cost of conservation.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson allocates 1.9 million dollars to aid eligible livestock producers in drought designated areas of Texas with a subsidy of 7.50 dollars per ton of hay or roughage. The program, proposed by Governor Allan Shivers, targets 160 counties and allows cost sharing up to 80 percent for soil and water conservation practices, plus annual rental payments for land placed in conservation reserves.
The Ada Lions club honored Vanoss FFA members and conservationists at a noon meeting at the Aldridge Hotel. About 40 Vanoss FFA students received recognition for soil conservation efforts, with county and state awards totaling 65 dollars.
The Deans Dr W F and Jack devote effort to 700 acres near Ada Oklahoma not for money but for the satisfaction of land improvement. Jack leads in farming while Dr Dean recalls buying the land in 1948 and learning farming through hard experience with soil conservation help.
The WEEKLY analyzes Pontotoc County drouth and heat in 1956 against the notorious summers of 1934 and 1936. It notes 1956’s 17 days above 100 in July and 18 to 20 days in August, with Ada recording 115 and 116 degree spikes in 1936. Dryness, however, outstrips past years, with 108 rainless days in 1934 and 101 days between rains in 1936, while 1956 remains a strong but not record setter.
