Under clear August skies and a south breeze, the Seventeenth Ada Ells Rodeo continued with families enjoying the second night of tough competition. Clark McIntire led steer roping as about 5,500 spectators filled the arena Wednesday.
The Ada Rodeo second night drew a larger crowd with an enhanced grand entry. Recruiters led the procession before the performance and about 100 horses filled the arena. Notables included Slim Whaley and Everett Beutler, with judges Hub Whiteman and Tell McMillan. Ta ter Decker posted a 14.1 second calf run the fastest yet.
General Dwight Eisenhower rejected a White House invitation to Washington for a briefing on international affairs. He accepted weekly CIA reports and will receive similar dispatches for Adlai Stevenson. Truman’s press secretary said the invitation was in the works before Stevenson’s talks. Truman planned a news conference this afternoon.
Oklahoma resumes hot summer weather with statewide 95 to 105 degree forecast and record readings. Observer Ed Pitt notes a 79 degree night while Muskogee Sallisaw Enid and Ponca City report rainfall under a quarter inch. over 19 cities top 100 degrees.
A Perry woman, June Frolick, was killed when a truck carrying feed caught fire after colliding with a Kansas-Oklahoma Gulf locomotive at a crossing on U S 266 west of Dewar. Driver Earl Painter, 24, Guthrie, was critically injured as the locomotive derailed but crews were unharmed. The fatality toll for Oklahoma in 1952 rose to 323.
Seattle climber Alan Grant, 19, survived five lightning bolts after reaching Mt Stuart with companion Paul Brikoff, 20, who was killed. Grant spent three days awaiting rescue and was airlifted to Seattle with serious burns.
Homer School's dates announced by C. A. Gentry principal. Enrollment set for Friday Aug 29 and classes begin Sept 1. The building has been repainted with interior updates and new furniture. Teachers include Mrs. Anna Burchett and Mrs. Carlos Laughlin.
Marvin E. Coyle retired executive vice president and director at General Motors was selected for the Cardinal Newman Award. The honor was created in 1950 by the Newman Club Federation of 520 Catholic student clubs.
Generally fair and hot conditions continue in Oklahoma with temperatures in the 70s. Tonight and tomorrow will see extended heat and dry skies with a warm high near the upper 90s to low 100s expected coast to coast.
In Warren Ohio three masked men forced a bank official’s car off the road and robbed him of about 71000 in cash from Union Savings and Trust Co. Foley, the branch manager, said two attackers jumped out with a shotgun and revolver. A neighborhood woman reportedly recorded the license plate as the car sped away. Foley was unharmed.
Tulsa police radio said five escapees from the Claremore jail were at large after one drowned in the Verdigris River and another was captured nearby. The group included Joseph Hayes and Ray Visor with other fugitives from Oregon Washington Illinois Minnesota New Jersey, all but Visor federal prisoners. Robinson was armed and had $250. Authorities described the jailbreak and escape route as Jailer Brown was shaken but unharmed.
Four more children have joined the eight patients already in Valley View hospital’s polio ward. Melvin and Patricia Overturf from Idabel are 12 and 7 years old, along with Jo Dotson, 4, and Danny Morgan from Shawnee. All are reported in good condition.
In Encino California two 9 year olds hurled rocks at traffic as Officer W W Offutt watched. He mounted his heavy motorcycle and sped up the hill toward the boys. Juvenile authorities took disciplinary action afterward but doubts remain about its impact.
Contestants post times with Clark McIntyre from Limestone Gap clocking 17.5 seconds and J D Holleyman of Ysleta 22.6. Other names include Shoot Webster Nowata 23.9, Buddy Neal Van Horn 25.3, Toots Mansfield Big Springs 28.3, Warren Hunt Stonewall 35.8, John Pogue Miami 43.8, John Bowers Tulsa 49.0, Everett Shaw Stonewall 58.5, Tell McMillian Ada 79.4, and Jack Skipworth Clovis 47.9 in the event standings.
Sen Robert S Kerr announced support for Gov Adlai Stevenson the Democratic presidential nominee. He said he would get even by helping ensure Stevenson serves two full terms and Oklahoma remains Democratic. Kerr, vacationing in Minnesota, plans active campaign work and return to Oklahoma next month. He mused on flying saucers attributing them to atmospheric disturbances from hot air and connected the outbreak to political conventions.
A doctor descended 1000 feet into the Pierre Saint Martin cave to treat a fallen explorer named Loubens. The mission took 2 percent hours on a steel cable as crews plan a careful ascent. Condition stationary, great hopes. Both doctors and Loubens are part of the expedition exploring the cavern.
Jack Dillon appointed as general fund drive chairman for the 1952 Ada Community Chest campaign. He will be aided by a large group of officers not yet named as the local fund raising drive begins the first week of October.
Daisie Belle Britt an Ada high school English teacher was unanimously selected by a five member committee to apply for a Ford Foundation National Committee on High School Teacher Fellowship. Four hundred fellowships are offered nationwide to pursue a year away from classrooms to broaden liberal education and improve teaching.
U S Marines repelled two heavy Communist charges near Bunker Hill in Western Korea to maintain their hard won hold. The engagements occurred Wednesday night and today with Marines sustaining no reported breakthrough and asserting control over the position.
Chinese government seeks return of Lt. Gen. Pang Tsu Mow and $25 million plus amid a legal battle in Mexico City. Separately near Panmunjom, UN forces report heavy Communist casualties after multiple attempts to retake hills as Marines endure artillery barrages and counterattacks.
About 500 Tulsa municipal workers returned to duty after accepting a wage increase package from Mayor Clancy Warren worth 342000 dollars annually. The strike began with 200 water and sewer employees and grew to 500 across garbage and street departments. Pay raises hinge on a 40 hour week and overtime rules with cost of living indices. The agreement extends to September 16 to assess payment effects.
Oklahoma City police cracked down after a 16 year old theater usher was beaten and left unconscious. Four youths and a 32 year old veteran were beaten previously. Two teen age gang disturbances led to two officers being roughed up and four more youths jailed. Officers fired warning shots and arrested two men and two women on drunkenness, resisting arrest, and loitering charges.
Rep. Victor Wickersham urges a set deadline for the Korean truce talks with the Communists. The House Armed Services member says talks have dragged on beyond the 30 day plan as Communists gain strength. He will tour U S military facilities in Korea and the Far East to aid efforts to end the stalemate.
Rome News Agency reports Italy has bolstered its armed forces by 800 tanks and 328 war planes since the start of a U S military aid program.
A 17 month old, John Robinson Jr., died after tumbling 14 stories from a New York apartment window. The child, trying to escape his mother, climbed a bench to a radiator and fell. bushes reportedly cushioned the impact.
