Ada schools superintendent T. W. Robison explains the 1912 book adoption plan amid lawsuits over contracts. He weighs cost, quality, and timing, noting the 1908 contract expired and 1912 contracts offer exchange discounts while ensuring books for reopening.
Melton reports thirty six rural schools in Pontotoc county are in session with forty six teachers employed. This may be the largest number of summer sessions ever held in the county. The schools run about seven months a year on average, with few below six months.
Muskogee August 13. Supervisor Francis J. Meek reports county branches of the Eastern Oklahoma Agricultural Association are expanding. He tours the eastern part of the state and plans early organization in additional counties. Three meetings are scheduled in Marchal county at Madill August 29 Bryan county at Durant August 30 and Atoka county at Atoka August 20.
A stalk sent by Joe Sloan of Center is on display at the News office window. It bears three large ears and shows farmers in the bottom farms area have abundant corn this season per reports from Center mail carrier Mr Harrell.
New York lawmakers adopt the Frawley committee report charging Gov. Sulzer with diverting campaign contributions for private use. Assembly votes 64 to 30 to proceed with impeachment. the session extends into the night as leaders debate postponement and conduct.
In Washington officials welcomed Frederico Gamboa’s statement of faith in U S judgment and a peaceful path to resolve Mexico’s crisis. President Wilson and Secretary Bryan voiced optimism while John Lind arrived in Mexico City to advance a quiet, peaceable program. Captain Capeheart reported no danger to Americans near Ciudad del Carmen amidst rebel threats. protection from Mexican authorities was noted.
A southbound Katy train crushed an Indian man two miles north of Hazel on a sharp curve. The engineer could not stop in time, and the body was found two car lengths behind the train. The remains were taken to Konawa. no murder was evident from the warm body.
Gen. Isaac R. Sherwood of Ninth Ohio, the sole Union Civil War veteran in the current U S House, marked his seventy eighth birthday amid notes of his unique distinction. The 435 member body previously counted several veterans, but a Democratic landslide left him as the lone survivor.
About 8 o clock Monday evening fire was found in a concrete brick building at the 9th and Stonewall corner owned by R. E. Blanks and recently used by Prof. E. C. Wilson. Neighbors quickly extinguished it. the empty house likely ignited by stacked papers sparked by a rat.
Reverend T. V. B. Mullinax departed this morning on a business trip to Saskatoon.
Governor Cruce accepts the resignation of Justice J. J. Dunn from the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Dunn will move to Oakland California and form a partnership with a leading California lawyer. His resignation becomes effective September 1 as ten applicants seek the vacancy. the governor will appoint before the court’s fall session in September.
G Leland Thompson and W F Branstetter from Jesse traveled to Ross to visit relatives and stopped in Ada Wednesday night and Thursday morning to see the bustling city sights.
New York reports that Hayti’s military escort at Tancrede Auguste’s funeral fired on the casket in St. Mary’s Cathedral instead of presenting arms. Engineer Marfield Kemp said twenty four soldiers fired into the body, causing panic among hundreds present. Kemp noted political enemies of Auguste and unconfirmed reports of poisoning.
The Copan and Ramona boards of education in Washington county announce upcoming legal action against the state election board over the school tax distribution referendum. A law firm will argue improper publicity and missing elections in many precincts, with other districts expected to join.
Complete returns from most Oklahoma counties show all five state questions carried. The highest support went to repeal section 18 of the mining law while question 57 for county input on township government received the least backing. Tulsa County results are pending and won’t alter the totals. Official canvass starts Tuesday and will be certified to Governor Cruce.
In Albany on August 12 1920 Democrats roll eighty five to impeach Governor Sulzer amid conflict with Republican and progressive foes over wilful and corrupt acts and high crimes. Mrs Sulzer reportedly takes full blame for Wall Street dealings involving campaign funds.
Wednesday afternoon a blaze at Stonewall destroyed the residence of E. M. Correll occupied by Mr. Holstein a Katy agent and a barn at the same location plus another on Will Hennegar's farm. Loss estimated at at least 2500 dollars. Fire reportedly started by a gasoline iron explosion and spread rapidly leaving little chance to save property.
