Allied forces hold a broad stretch from Arras to Chauny amid ongoing front-line stalemate. Allied reserves remain intact as both sides prepare for a renewed push with heavy artillery and local skirmishes reported near Albert and Mont Didier.
United Press reports that fresh American troops, trained at home, will be shipped to England as transports are ready. They will replace British units training there while the best divisions head directly to France. Government views this year as decisive in beating Germany and securing democracy.
Washington April 3 Congress began pushing key war measures to strengthen allied effort. A resolution was introduced in the House to give military and navy bills precedence on the House calendar for the remainder of the session.
Second Lieut. Harry Pitcher was discharged after a trial by court martial at Ft Sill Oklahoma. He faced charges of enlisting men to smuggle liquor from Missouri to Fort Leavenworth Kansas.
Chicago on April 3 reports anti saloon wins in twenty nine Tungia townships and a dry legislature next fall to ratify the federal prohibition amendment. Socialist anti war candidates were defeated in the city.
Wewoka Oklahoma April 3 Dr W T Huddleston of Konawa was brought before Seminole county council of defense on a charge of disloyal and seditious utterances. He admitted talking too much and was ordered to take the allegiance oath, keep silent, and publish an apology to the loyal people of Seminole county.
Washington April 3 The house concurred in a senate resolution requesting the president to designate a day of prayer for American farmers. Four section, ringie township and township plats on sale at News office.
Oklahoma City April 3 Special report: at the state council of defense monthly meeting held March 30 the focus was on securing farm labor, boosting food supplies, and making county councils efficient. Farmers' representation on county councils was debated. A resolution calls for investigation of underperforming councils and necessary changes. Farmers urged not to plant over half their land to cotton to reserve land for food crops.
Oklahoma State Board of Agriculture reports wheat at 60 percent condition, up 7 points from last month, with better yields in the North and Northeast. Southwest to Northwest show little change as some fields are plowed for other crops. Rains in recent weeks boost varied crops. alfalfa at 76 percent, spring pasture slow, soil moisture at 52 percent. fruit prospects peach 62, apples 75, cherries 76. oats acreage rising due to replanted wheat and overall larger yields anticipated.
Oklahoma City April 3 Special. Attorney General Freeling rules disloyalty by teachers can justify removal though no statute specifies disloyalty. The opinion arises from a Craig County Defense Council case and cites oath of office obligating faithfulness to laws and the U S Constitution. War era loyalty viewed as breach of oath meriting discharge.
In the city vote results W. E. Conger is mayor, with W. B. Jones as commissioner of finance and accounting and P. H. Deal as commissioner of public works and property. Turnout was light with ward totals listed for each candidate across all four wards.
April 1 1918 retail bakers must keep a record of each flour bill and require surrender of the last bill when selling a new sack. Purchases based on family size at 1 1 2 pounds per person per week. Buyers must bring old bills to buy again and are entitled to first purchase without the prior bill.
Washington April 3 the senate judiciary committees adopted an amendment prescribing twenty years imprisonment and a 210000 dollar fine for those supporting Germany or its allies in war or opposing the United States. The same penalties apply to obstructing by falsehoods or acts to obstruct government war bond issues or recruiting.
Austrian foreign minister Czernin in Vienna said Austria’s ruler supports peace and that fifty five million people share his view. Washington officials respond that President Wilson sees no solid sign Austria or Germany seeks a just lasting peace. Czernin’s speech had once given hope, but Germany’s influence over Austria dimmed it. Also listed are marriage licenses for Ada residents including Short Baker and Willoughby variants.
Milwaukee April 3 United Press reports with eighty percent of votes counted that Lenroot Republican leads Davies Democrat by about 6,000 for the U S Senate seat while Victor Berger Socialist trails by roughly 20,000. Davies gains pace as counting continues and backers remain hopeful.
The Grow a Garden campaign under J. W. Bridges has produced splendid results and will boost the state's food supply. Gardens are under way in nearly every community, with the Bridges pamphlet on garden growing praised by the government and defense councils of several states requesting to use it.
Oklahoma City April 3. Under J H Gordon McAlester state chairman of the Third Liberty Loan drive and with co operation of the State Council of Defense a campaign is under way to arouse every person in the state to the loan. The state is divided into eight districts with district and county chairmen. School district organizations will reach every county. County councils of defense cooperate. The campaign opens April 6 and lasts four to six weeks with speakers including ex President Taft Senator Owen Lieut Nance and Sergeant Edwards among others.
In Sulphur Oklahoma on April 3 a 72 year old preacher Rev A J Capers allegedly boasted Germany would win the war. A group of young citizens invaded his room at night shaved his head while he slept forced him to kiss the flag and pledge allegiance then told him to leave town by the shortest route.
In Chicago on April 2, all thirty three Socialist candidates for Aldermen were defeated. Mayor Thompson endorsed candidates also lost. Aldermen were chosen in thirty five wards, producing a Democratic city council with two Socialist holdovers. Old papers offered for sale at News Office.
