Fifteen candidates from city, county, and state races shared thoughts with the community at a Candidates Forum held Monday night. The event aimed to help attendees form a clear idea of who to vote for, with insights spanning local and broader issues.
Andy McCormack, a former Marshall student teacher for three years, is back at Marshall High School for the next few months to complete his degree and plans to resume teaching at Battle Creek Central High School. He says the positive attitude helped him reach today. See story on page 37.
Terri Larson, Enbridge public affairs manager for the U.S. natural gas unit, has become the main media contact after the July 26 Marshall oil spill. She arrived the evening of the spill and worked 97 hours in her first six days, handling inquiries as the story drew international attention.
The annual Marshall River Clean-Up and Conservation Day grows from 20 volunteers to over 200, with this year's event on October 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers meet at Marshall Public Service Building and then split into groups at designated cleanup spots. See story on page 45.
Johan Vanniekerk of Ft. Wayne Inc pleaded guilty to murdering his 3 year old daughter at the Marshall Comfort Inn in May 2009 and to assisting his 72 year old mother’s death. He received life in prison without parole and 24 to 60 months for the assisted death. He said he was sorry. See story on page 20.
Marshall Police Department and State Farm host a Car Seat Rodeo today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone with concerns about proper installation can have their child and seat fitted. The event is part of fall celebrations including Harvest Festival and Wilder Creek haunted attractions with events through late October.
