Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Dr Randy Davis and Nurse Sue Boley issued a letter to families outlining the district’s strategy for a new flu strain and the seasonal flu. Davis said the district is unsure of the impact but is working to maintain a healthy learning environment. See story on page 16.
Governor Jennifer Granholm and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi announced on September 14 the signing of an amended gaming compact. The revision stabilizes the revenue sharing arrangement between the state and the tribe and its FireKeepers Casino in Emmett Township between Marshall and Battle Creek. See story on page 14.
Emergency services obtain a grain tube tool to help save lives in crises. Lt. Don Watson notes grain moves around a person and can suffocate them, worse than quicksand. See story on page 60.
D Knight Designs in Marshall held its second Day of Caring last Monday offering free salon and spa services to job seekers needing a makeover for interviews. The event aimed to assist those out of work by providing professional styling at no charge.
At a work session, Superintendent Randy Davis outlined district priorities for a new school bond proposal. Marshall awaits word on ballot timing while the district seeks interest-free funding from the federal stimulus package, currently ranking fifth for approval.
The 2009 United Way Fund Drive in Marshall mobilizes support from Linda Brown of Fountain Clinic Phil Mershon of Mobile Meals Mar Lee School coordinator Meredith Lazar and new Executive Director Patty Franke Belew plus Cub Scout Calvin Smith to reach a $130000 target. See story on page 43.
