Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm signed an executive order naming former Marshall mayor Bruce Rasher transition manager to coordinate the state’s move to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. The order takes effect January 17, 2010. See story on page 63.
Marshall High School Marching Band and Color Guard earned the highest rating, a 1, at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District XI Marching Band Festival in Plainwell. Band director Jeremy Root expressed pride in the students. See story on page 42.
Guy Picketts, Marshall's code enforcement officer since last year, has investigated 479 property maintenance complaints in the Marshall area. He works two days a week and says the effort improves how the community and city look. See story on page 40.
Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis said the district and Board of Education will publish a rebuttal article after a Michigan Education Association feature in Voice magazine alleged higher spending on custodial services since the August 2007 firing of custodial staff. The response targets the MEA claim and aims to present district figures and context.
Marshall High School reports its girls varsity golf team in a fourth consecutive state finals appearance in the Grand Rapids area and the boys tennis squad in their first state bid since 2006.
