Marshall Public Schools Board of Education approved layoffs for up to five teaching staff as budget projections show a $2.4 million deficit over the next two years. Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis said this step informs affected teachers ahead of the June budget approval and potential reassignments.
The Marshall Area Fire Fighter Ambulance Authority held a groundbreaking on May 17 for a 9,904 square foot building at 16984 Burlingame Drive off Old 27. The $707,000 project will be funded by $207,000 in existing funds and a 15 year loan. MAFFAA Executive Director Mark Burke said the expanded facility will ease crowding at City Hall and support growth since 2005.
Don Weberling, a service officer for American Legion Post 79 and a member of VFW Post 4073, vows to locate Vietnam and Vietnam era veterans who never received certificates from the 1973 Memorial Day parade in Marshall. He will persist until all certificates are issued.
The Marshall City Council adopted a no tax increase balanced budget for 2013 with staffing cuts in a few areas and minor service delays. Utilities will rise slightly due to a water rate hike and a 1 percent admin fee for tax collection. A separate note honors Tribal Manufacturing as a 2012 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch.
