More than 200 special education students gathered at MHS Track in Marshall on May 12 for Region 19 Special Olympics. After 30 years of hosting in Battle Creek at Harper Creek High School or Doris Klaussen Development Center, organizers approved a rotation to involve more area schools. See story on page 47.

Homer High senior earns Gold Award for park cleanup
Katrina Cribbins, 17, a Homer High School senior, will receive the Gold Award from Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan for leading a park cleanup in Homer. Eight Southwest Michigan Scouts will be honored May 20 at the Kalamazoo center. Cribbins aimed for the top, unsure if she’d reach it.

Four honored for efforts at Walden Pond fire
Marshall Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Rhodes honored two Marshall Police Officers, Garrett Moore and Anthony Philpott, plus two Walden Pond Apartment residents Susan Zebolski and Patricia Fox for their quick actions during the Easter morning Walden Pond fire on April 8. Rhodes praised the citizens and public servants for life saving efforts, noting that calling 911 and alerting families helped avert tragedy.
