Umpire Bill Welke on professionalism and on-field talk
Veteran umpire Bill Welke discusses focus and impartiality, noting players’ varied chatter with umpires and the shift away from frequent on-field conversation. He recalls moments with Cal Ripken Jr and other stars, highlights six decades of big games, and stresses staying even-keeled amid tense moments. He reflects on ballpark atmospheres, preferences for old charm and new amenities, and the impact of climate-controlled parks on game tempo.
