History of Relay for Life: Tacoma origin to Calhoun event
The article recounts how Dr. Gordy Klatt started the American Cancer Society Relay For Life as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer in Tacoma in 1985. He ran 24 hours, raising 27000 dollars, inspiring a 24-hour team relay concept. By 1986, 19 teams raised 33000 dollars at Stadium Bowl. This year's local event is set for July 19-20 at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds.
