Historic 1978 blizzard halted town and shut nonessentials
Town blocked off and nonessential businesses ordered closed through the weekend after a massive storm. Fire Chief Lewis Shellenberger noted firefighters remained on duty Monday, with shifts starting the previous Wednesday, as crews used four wheel drives and snowmobiles to transport nurses and power plant workers. Downtown merchants and volunteers cleared Main Street sidewalks. Residents recalled drifting snow and tunnel-like roads, and residents opened homes to stranded people. Community efforts included rescuing motorists on I-94 and sheltering them at Marshall High School.
