Marshall church aids refugee program with local drive
First Presbyterian Church of Marshall launched a six week donation push through Bethany Christian Services Refugee and Immigrant Services after a powerful photo moved members. The effort collects coats hats mittens and toys with help from Marshall Middle School students and AmeriCorps Vista liaison Christian Hawkins. Refugees arriving in Grand Rapids include Congolese Bhutanese Burmese Somali and Afghan populations, as Bethany assists with basics and housing while explaining refugee versus asylum seeker status. Last fiscal year Bethany aided over 300 refugees with hundreds more projected this year, spanning infants to elderly with diverse needs.
