In Marshall the one month anniversary of the Enbridge oil spill nears as company President and CEO Pat Daniel reports ongoing cleanup. He notes progress at the leak site and along Talmadge Creek and says the company is working closely with nearby residents. See page 24.
Jeff Siefert, 39, from Albion, survived a severe Aug 21 crash at Calhoun County Fair during the SOJ moto cross event after being told he would be a quadriplegic. He regained movement and returned to the fair to raffle off his bike, recounting his act as a sign of recovery.
Marshall City Council approved an industrial facilities tax abatement for Tenneco totaling 109000 in property taxes over 12 years. Tenneco will invest just over 4.2 million in personal property, create 54 new jobs and retain 99 current jobs. Economic official Mike Hindenach praised the expansion. See election results on page 6.
Tuesday at the 162nd Calhoun County Fair hosted Kids Day with a crowd of kids, parents and families. Fair employee Marcia Wilson said attendance nearly set a record and gate receipts were high. Highlights included the 5th Annual WIN 98.5 Frog Jumping Contest and a bike giveaway. see photos on page 51.
The Skate Park Committee reports $10,000 raised toward upgrading the Marshall Skate Park. Committee member Gipp Klein cites the Art Deck Show as a success. A skateboarding school and demo weekend are planned for Sept. 3-5, with details on page 10.
Marshall High School opens fall play with the girls varsity golf and boys varsity tennis starting their seasons on Wednesday August 18. The girls volleyball begins Friday at the Gull Lake Invitational while the boys tennis hosts next week and the girls swimming dives in Thursday August 26. The varsity football squad begins at St. Joe on August 27 with scores and photos in the sports section.
The Success Fund, in partnership with the Marshall Community Foundation, provides opportunities for investor support to benefit Marshall Public Schools for the 2010-11 year.
