A four alarm fire on Easter morning at Walden Pond Townhomes on Arms Street Marshall destroyed six apartment units. Residents were evacuated safely as crews from Marshall, Marshall Township, Marengo and Fredonia controlled the blaze by 9 am after a 8:30 am 911 call. See page 54.
Marshall City Council held a budget workshop on April 10 for fiscal years 2013 and 2014. An estimated 2013 shortfall of 373,940 grew to 537,718 as tax revenues fell 7.4 percent versus an expected 2.5 percent decrease. Six staff cuts, a 1 percent collection fee, service cuts, and 54,104 drawn from reserves produced a balanced 2013 budget.
Marshall resident Jim Dobbins received the Golden Book of Deeds Outstanding Citizen Award at the Marshall Exchange Club meeting on April 9. The plaque praised his caring manner, listening ear, leadership, and his value to patients and the community.
Seven dispatchers and eight officers were honored by the Marshall Police Department on April 10 for their collaboration in aiding the arrest of three suspects after a high speed chase in the early hours of February 10. Police Chief Jim Schwartz praised the seamless cooperation and dedication to excellence.
John Ramos recalls meeting Joe Cooper in Marshall during the mid 1950s when he had no glove yet. Cooper, who arrived in 1948 after WWII service and a Western Michigan degree, started a summer baseball program in 1950 that once fielded up to 400 players each summer, transforming local amateur baseball.
