George Bowman of Acton enters a hand tooled purse with a unique pattern that wins first prize at the Canadian National Exhibition. Among 12 entries in the Manufacturers Building display, Bowman's bag is judged best and earns $100 after voters pass by his exhibit.
Rev R H Armstrong preaches to inaugurate the Harvest Festival at St Albans Church. The altar features wheat sheaves a loaf and a grape. Rev K G Richardson of St George's Georgetown preaches Sunday evening. Other congregations are invited to attend. A harvest supper for the congregation sponsored by the Guild closes the festival on Monday.
Miss Nellie Anderson, missionary on furlough, attended the Bible Society fireside at St. Alban's Parish Hall last Sunday evening. She used a flannelgraph to discuss the Bible as music and singing filled the program. The event discussed chartering a route for a Billy Graham meet. The Junior Farmers from the county gathered at Milton fair Saturday with several entries noted.
His Excellency Most Reverend K R Turner conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 25 candidates at St Josephs Church Acton on Monday evening. Visiting clergy included Reverend Callaghan MacDougall Cremmen Bodendistel and Sullivan as the procession and choir led by Father Morgan followed with prayers and blessing. The bishop shared experiences in China with the Scarborough Foreign Missionary Society and praised the candidates catechetical knowledge.
A large crowd from Acton Erin and Georgetown high schools watched Milton win the district field day at Milton with 147 points. Acton 118 Erin 100 Georgetown 63. Friday will see the boys field dash run at Acton after a pace dispute over a recent finish. Principal A Wood of Milton awarded trophies to champions including L Darou Betty Anderson R Landsborough B Skilling F Cooper N Lockhurst Jim Kern. A full event list will appear next week with photos.
The St Alban’s branch of the Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen held its first full meeting in the parish hall last Thursday evening. After the business portion a 40 minute sound and color film The Japanese Family was screened. Officers elected/appointed include President Janet Rose vice president George Lee secretary George Hargrave and treasurer Gordon Lawson. The group set aside two minutes per meeting to draft constitutional articles and discussed fundraising, a men’s test, and the zaar. A December date was set and new members William Barrett and Charles Cutis welcomed.
Acton police investigated a two car accident during heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon at the Guelph Street and Queen Street intersection. Reind G. Wikkerink's car collided with Gitte McFadden's vehicle, McFadden's car sustaining about $250 in damage.
An “independent” agent under Chamber of Commerce plans to survey all Acton store closing hours. The Tuesday meeting of 22 downtown merchants discussed shifting from Saturday to Friday openings. Solicitor Leatherland will gauge the town council’s stance on the controversial issue amid talks on Factory Shop and Office Closing Act by laws requiring a three fifths majority to petition for a new by law.
Milton Board reports rising attendance across Georgetown Milton and Acton high schools with Georgetown at 249 up 35, Milton 245 up five and preparations for new classrooms. Administration reviews bus contracts school night classes basic English and pupil transfers while residents complain about bus routes and a high school sale dispute remains unresolved.
Prince of Flowerton a German Shepherd owned by Fred Pfiefle of Acton captured multiple trophies at a York Armories obedience triad in Toronto. The dog earned several top placements including first in German Shepherds and third in open class as Pfiefle trained it since puppyhood. Pfiefle, a member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Canada, has seen the dog win over the weekend.
Bill Skilling and Frances Oakes win senior titles as the high school field day concludes after two days of events. Intermediates Wendy MacKenzie and Frank Cooper claim titles with Ruth Landsborough and Bob Coxe as juniors champions. top finishers advance to the inter-school Milton meet next Wednesday.
A two car collision on No 2 highway west of Rockwood near the Bole Mills school house caused $1850 in damage. The Land car suffered $20 damage and the Loates car $950. Driver Franklin Stephen Dantoes of Guelph and Haugh Job Lean of Rockwood were involved. Mr Lund was hospitalized.
Final plans were made at the Catholic Women's League regular meeting at the home of Mrs E Marks. President Mrs E Heffernan opened with the League prayer. Elma Praida read minutes, Mrs Kenney reported on the wedding breakfast catering, and fall bazaar arrangements were set with committees appointed. Refreshments followed.
Congregations attended morning and evening services as Churchill United Church marked its 117th anniversary. Rev. JW Pratt of Kitchener spoke at both services, assisted by Rev. Townsend. A turkey supper sponsored by the WAU featured the St Catharine Gospel quartet, soloists, and a post supper program with readings and music.
The Mothers Auxiliary met at the Scout Hall on Tuesday September 27 with 11 members and one new member. Mrs Lena Mason was elected president with Nan Hurst as vice president Edith Jennings as secretary and Ethel Haggett as treasurer. Plans were made for future euchre sessions. The Mizpah Benediction closed the meeting.
