Glimpses of the war-time session summarize its six day run. Highlights include Budget discussions, the creation of a Ministry of Munitions and Supply, and amendments to defeat government opposition on troop movements.
The Halton Presbyterial Woman's Missionary Society meeting at Link Hall Oakville on September 12 passed a resolution urging wartime prohibition of all intoxicating liquors and a copy to the Canadian premier and Ontario premier. The gathering also heard about China printing for Protestant churches and noted bereavements and address changes of members.
Thomas Wayling is promoted to Major and appointed Chief Press Liaison Officer for the Department of National Defence. The move elevates Wayling to a senior public affairs role within the department.
Mr. Bert Mason presents a curious garden scene in the Fare Press window. Runner beans and trumpet vine intertwined showing a single bean blooming among the flowers, attracting attention from passersby and readers.
The Duke of Devonshire and Lakeside Chapters of the LO.D.E. joined the first war time appeal collecting children's clothing blankets and funds. Citizens responded well sending 165 articles valued at 64.00 as well as donations from visitors at the Lakeside Fair booths to support children removed from homes in London England.
The 26th annual Acton Fall Fair closed with strong attendance and varied exhibits. A record first-night crowd exceeded 2,000, while weather aided turnout on both days. Highlights included the Historical Exhibit, enlarged Royal Visit photographs from The Star, and a new variety program with Russ Craghton and the Canadian Mountaineers. Prizes were awarded in multiple classes, and the parade prizes went to Acton residents.
The Forty Hours Devotions at St Josephs Church ended after three days of large attendance and fervent prayer. Rev Miliszkiewicz preached on the Leave of God as Monsignors Blair and McCann led the ceremonies. Parish pastor Rev McBride attended all events, and new stained glass windows altar cards a steel tabernacle and altar missals were donated to the church. Everyone is invited to view the new windows.
The autumn wedding of Beince May Blaxey and George Eric Nightingale took place at Dundalk home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Blaxey. Rev Herbert Shaw presided, music by Mrs. Wilbert Inkster and Mrs. Shaw, a buffet luncheon followed, guests came from Toronto Port Credit Brampton Orangeville Guelph and Stratford.
An Actonian in England writes after the war declaration praising the Prime Minister and urging unity. He notes Canada’s promised support and Acton’s expected contribution, offering a welcome to newcomers from Acton at his Berkshire address near London and Oxford.
Kenneth W. Taylor of Hamilton has been appointed Secretary of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board. He is a professor of economics at McMaster University and has served as adviser to multiple government departments.
Acton church marks Rally Day with first use of private amplification for organ and chimes broadcasting to town. Music featured junior choir, orchestra, and strong adult classes. Gifford urges church schools to advance outreach and youth involvement in future church work.
Acton contributes its share to the war effort with sixteen men in uniform within a week of Canada’s declaration. Named among the units are ex-members of the Lorne Scots and 29th Battery in Guelph, plus men with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and the Hamilton Highlanders.
At the fair Adam Fair faced chiefly minor mishaps with some notable incidents. Jimmie Pogue fell from a bolting horse, Vivian Clark was knocked down, and J B Devereaux was thrown when his horse tripped over a potato box. A road race horse broke a leg, a stove leaked but a fire was quickly controlled, and Charles Davies was charged with assault after striking John MacVan with a hammer. Davies awaits a Police Court appearance in Milton next Wednesday.
The Free Press notes progress identifying portraits from its Family Album with input from readers. A September issue photo once labeled as Dr Lowry is now believed to show Joseph Fyfe, a merchant tailor, based on H Ramshaw’s letter. Next captions feature George Havill, J C Wilson, and A E Nicklin, noting their public roles and community involvement.
The September gathering of Rockalong Women's Institute was hosted by Mrs W Pattern. Mrs W McNabb chaired due to the president's absence. Enid McNabb led the current events and Helen Pasmore read a modern biography. Mrs B Ramaden organized a contest won by Mrs Shulds. Tea concluded a pleasant half hour.
The Boy Scouts meet in the YM Y on Monday at 7 30 pm. The Annual Meeting of Action Honey Club will be held Thursday September 28 at 8 pm in the Council Chamber. All interested in hockey in Acton are welcome.
