Winners at Acton Fair Highlight 1939 horse classes

The Acton Fair prize list for 1939 lists numerous winners across brood mares, colts, geldings and fillies. Nassagaweya School Fair Held at Brookville

The Nassagaweya School Fair took place at the Township Fair in Brookville on September 14 with most schools present except S. S. No. 2 in quarantine. S. S. No. 8 won the Championship School Fair Shield. numerous prize winners across crops and produce are listed, including oats, barley, wheat, corn, beans, roots, and vegetables.

Acton Council Debates Red Cross, by Law, and Petitions

Acton council met with Reeve F. McCutcheon presiding as councillors discussed forming a Red Cross Society, a public meeting planned for October 4, and a speaker on voluntary registration of Canadian women. A new by law on retail closures was read and passed, with fines up to 50 dollars and Sept. 30 enforcement. Public notices cover tax collection, by law publication, and a joint mill street pole removal meeting set for Oct. 3.

Acton Boy Enlists in Army Service Corps

A second Acton youth, Telford Alrenee son of John Kenney, has joined the Army Service Corps. He enlisted last week and is on duty in Hamilton with the rank of Captain in his unit.

Barn Burns at Crewsons Corners Threshing Site

A barn on David Mannen’s farm at Crewsons Corners burned during threshing on Tuesday. Fire started in the separator, possibly from a stone in the machine, and spread rapidly destroying the barn with no livestock inside. The threshing outfit owned by Mr. Wilson of Edens was saved.

United Young People Hear Two Splendid Talks

The Young People's Society of the United Church met Tuesday evening. Frances Dils read scripture and business matters were discussed. Helen Ostrander gave a vivid account of travel to the States and the World’s Fair in New York. Jenn Lambert played a mouth organ solo. Dr. Nelson spoke on First Aid and gave a demonstration. Donalda and Margaret McPhail played a violin duet.

Erin Township Seeks Authority For Debentures

Erin Township Municipal Council met in Hillsburg on September 18 1939 with all members present. They applied to the Ontario Municipal Board for authority to pass a by law to issue debentures for 3000 for reconstruction and replacements to the Municipal Telephone System. Debentures aside the council paid sheep damage 67.00 relief 82.03 reads 830.96 and miscellaneous 82.68. Adjourned to meet Hillsburg October 23 or at the Reeve’s call.

Acton Fair Junior Projects Show Strong Results

Acton Fair Board reports success from its year long program with a Boys Grain Club and a Foal Club. Grain Club saw 15 of 20 members exhibit grain while Foal Club had 15 of 17 foals shown. Prizes listed with Charles McNabb leading in grain scoring. Foal Club results await final details.

Hydro Rate Maintains Level After Tax Update

Acton Public Utilities Commission met with Hansen McCutcheon and Kerr present. A Bell Telephone letter seeks remedy for non standard joint leads. Ontario Hydro Commission notified interim rate of 28.50 per hip. Lists items for Bell Telephone power supplies and guard duties. National Revenue excise tax details discussed and a joint meeting with Ontario Commission set for October 3. Arrears review urged disconnections over $5 after final notices. new typewriter purchase requested and tax assessment difficulties noted.

Esquesing Rural School Fair yields prize winners

The Esquesing Fair held at S S No 16 on September 14 showcased strong entries in vegetables grain flowers and livestock. Highlights included a shield won by S S No 14 Esquesing and trophies awarded to High Boy Norman Fendley and High Girl Doris Brownridge with numerous prize winners listed for oats corn soy beans beets onions pumpkins squash and more.
