Acton council approves a by law regulating store hours setting closings at 7 pm on Mon Tue Wed Thu and 10 pm on Friday with December 10 24 exemptions and September 30 effective date. Petitions seek Wednesday afternoon closings. next meeting will consider after review.
Urgent call from Acton and vicinity citizens to donate new blankets and garments for evacuated Great Britain children aged 604 years and money to buy more. Donations to the Y M C A on Saturday September 16 from 3 00 to 3 00 p m or 7 00 to 10 00 p m. The appeal is led by the Duke of Devonshire and Lakeside Chapters I C C E with LO DE coordinating Red Cross and war work.
Corrections to last week’s Free Press album identify No 5 as Rev John McLachlan, not Rev Lachlan Cameron. McLachlan was Knox Church minister from 1857 to 1861. Other captions note Postmaster James Matthews of Acton and an unlabeled engraving from Knox Church files.
Last night the United Church Rally Week featured an illustrated travelogue by Rev. I M Moyer, a former pastor who recently visited the Holy Land. Splendid views of notable sites were shown and the personal anecdotes pleased attendees as Mrs W J Beatty performed a delightful vocal solo under the direction of Rev G C Gifford.
The Eramosa Township council met in Rockwood with the Reeve presiding. The Auditors’ report for January 1 to August 31 was accepted. Captain K B Waller requested leave to enlist. Dr S Jackson was named acting Medical Officer of Health. Insurance with General Insurance Co. for one year at 142 dollars was approved after A E Wilson & Co. refused coverage. Accounts totaling 3618.03 were approved for payment. meeting adjourned to October 10.
The September meeting of the Women's Institute at Acton was held in Everton on August 31 in place of September 7. Ten ladies toured to Everton on September 7 for a productive afternoon. Mrs. Buchannan spoke on The Physical Side of Life, Erma Wilderspin performed Millinery Madness, and Mrs. George Lants discussed Pauline Johnson. A supper followed as the women sang the National Anthem and shared social time.
At the Acton YMCA board's first meeting, W G Mason was chosen president with W B Rumley as Honorary President and H W Hinton as 1st Vice President. W C Jones resigns as secretary to enlist for service, prompting plans to appoint a successor as the season opens.
Galt defeated Acton 10 to 2 to end the intermediate season after Acton bowing 3 to 0 to Galt last week. N Morton started for Acton, but fielding behind him was erratic while Galt played solidly at bat and in the field. First inning details show Clark, Singe, Pickard, Footitt, Bain, Eccles, Anderson, Adair, Bouty involved in scoring plays and errors.
The Free Press prints Halton MP Hughes Cleaver's note on Canada's War Parliament session. Col. Harry Hamilton of Sault Ste. Marie opened with a stirring address in the House of Commons. J. A. Blanchette, a French Canadian and U S overseas veteran, seconded the Ad dress in reply to the Throne Speech. The Prime Minister and Conservative Opposition followed with speeches.
Rev. E A Brooks Mrs R P Watson and Mrs George Havill were appointed the Purchasing Committee for the Acton Library Board at a Monday evening meeting. The committee will buy books the first week in October and welcome reader suggestions. The secretary was asked to request the YMCA Board to install a better lock on the library door due to missing articles. A plan to bring a well known writer and speaker to Acton for an evening was discussed but no action taken.
A special meeting of the Knox Church Ladies Aid was held in the church Class Room on September 5. Mrs. F Blow chaired in the absence of Mrs. Mc Arthur. Mrs. Reid acted as secretary as others were detained by illness.
A large barn belonging to Mrs. Ernest Robson on the highway west of Rockwood was completely destroyed by a Friday night fire. The blaze, visible for miles, wiped out the season’s crop and several livestock. only nearby buildings and a house survived with effort. Fire departments from Guelph and Victoria Road aided, as neighbors helped with water and hose lines. A bull and possibly one calf were reported lost. the cause may have been spontaneous combustion.
The Lakeside Chapter 1.0.D.E. met at Mrs. J. J. Stewart's home with Regent Mrs. A. J. Buchanan presiding. Miss Bessie Rawlings reported current events after a lengthy business session and hostesses served a lunch.
Esquesing Township Council at its September meeting appointed fourteen deputy game wardens including Daniel Allan Milton R R 3 Meldrum Stark Milton R R 5 George Woods Norval R R 2 Sperker Wilson Norval R R 1 Alfred Brigden Georgetown R R 2 Samuel Burton Norval Wilmer Watkins Acton R R 1 John Presswood Georgetown R R 1 Wm. J. McDonald Acton R R 2 A. W. Benton Limehouse L. L. Mullin Acton R R 4 George Leslie Acton R R 4 Harvey Nurse Georgetown R R 2 Nelson Stark Georgetown R R 3. Carried. The meeting also passed by-laws on school funding and tax penalties and adjourned to October 10.
Acton Fair plans a large program with new features at the Arena Show including music by Acton Citizens' Band, dish for Jack Creighton Mountainers, and a parade of school children. Halton Juniors shine in Inter-Club events at Brampton Fair and the Canadian National Exhibition with top placements in Clothing and Nutrition divisions.
Lightning struck a large frame barn at Castle Farm near Inglewood on Sunday, setting it ablaze and destroying the building its livestock and grain. Fifteen pigs two calves and 190 chickens perished along with 90 tons hay 90 tons straw and 2 500 bushels of grain. The fire spread to a nearby driving shed and burned it down as well. Insurance covered part of the loss.
The Knox Y W A monthly gathering was held at Mrs A K Mann's home. President Mrs R Spielvogel chaired. Frances McDowell sang a delight solo. Bessie Rawlings led the study book. Lunch was served by the committee after adjournment.
The Victoria Mission-Band held its regular monthly meeting at Knox Church with President Margaret McPhail in charge. Joan Somerville read scripture, prayers were offered by Joan Rumley and Helen McLeshin, reports by Mary Ritchie and Dora Hansen, announcements by Mrs Buchanan, and Joyce Desserault performed a solo before a concluding game.
Announcements list events including Bazaar and Mission Band activities at Knox Church on October 26, Harvest Home Service at Churchill on October 1 and 2, Fowl Supper and a Monday evening program. Edgewood Park closing dance set for Saturday night. Crews ons Comers Community Church marks its anniversary with services on Sunday afternoon September 3. Captain Poulton to provide special music.
