Landsborough Wins Gold Medal in Band Contest
Charles Landsborough of Acton and member of the Lorne Rifles Band Georgetown won the gold medal donated by Prof. C. F. Thiele Waterloo for the best cornet soloist in the Gilsas B Band Competition. The test piece Opera Bouquet No 1 featured The Fair Daughter of the Graces from Rigoletto. Eleven bands competed. winners were Larneites Georgetown York Township Boys Port Colborne Citizens Beamville Citizens. Major H E Adkins was adjudicator. prizes included 350 cash and G Conn Trophy for first place and 250 125 75 cash for subsequent places plus soloist medals.

The Acton Institute held a monthly meeting at Miss FE Hawthorne’s home last Thursday afternoon with President Mrs Gamble in charge. Miss Hawthorne spoke on Mother Love, Mrs Salt discussed current events, and Mrs Noble led a session on Welfare. A report on the District Annual with Kilbride was given by Mrs Wilderspin. The quartette sang He Walks with Me in the Garden. Donations were made to the Crippled Children’s Fund and a Guelph Hospital patient. The booth at Park opens Fall Fair day and Brandy plans an exhibit for Milton County Fair. The meeting closed with Mizpah benediction and thanks to the host and helpers.

Accident Narrowly Averted On Toronto Trip
A Stratford motorist fainted on a Saturday drive to Toronto with two sons and lost control. The eldest boy, fourteen, turned off the ignition and applied the emergency brake saving a serious crash. The car hit a chestnut tree on Alain Street West in front of John Nicol’s former home but sustained only front bumper damage. They resumed travel after rest to attend the Canadian National Exhibition.

Escaped Guelph convicts recaptured in Acton on Monday
George Simpson aged 18 and Euclid Lajeunesse aged 20 both from Ottawa escaped from the Guelph Reformatory working as cooks. They were spotted near Acton Main Street after traveling along the railway and were recaptured with aid from residents and night patrols. They kept small sums of money on capture and were returned to Guelph after detention.
