Edward E. Mith of English origin, long time resident of Acton, died last Tuesday at his daughter’s home in Toronto three weeks after returning for Exhibition time. He worked thirty years for Lyman Brothers and helped found the Sons of England in Canada fifty-one years ago. Survived by wife, two sons Sidney and William Frederick, three daughters, twenty-eight grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral coincided with the death of fellow founder Charles Buckner. Mrs Mith celebrated a 1922 anniversary. Little Trinity Church member.
Bert D Angeli, tied to the Milton jail case over liquor deaths, plans to wed a Streetaville girl in Milton as he awaits trial for manslaughter. Governor Archie McGibbon may lend a private aide for the ceremony, delaying the honeymoon. The marriage would be the first at Milton Jail in years.
Recalls the October 12 1876 delivery of 857 bushels of Red Fife wheat from Winnipeg to Toronto via Duluth and rail. Fifty years on Canada becomes leading wheat exporter with Western Canada producing vast crops and the Canadian Wheat Pool controlling about 70 percent of total wheat acreage. A Winnipeg Board of Trade banquet at the Royal Alexandra Hotel noted the anniversary.
Acton Municipal Council considers a distinctive crest for official papers and notices. Mr. H. P. Moore proposed adopting the Acton England crest with maple leaves replacing the oak leaves, following guidance from Sir Harry Brittain on adapting the design.
The Acton Council passed a resolution thanking H P Moore for presenting a custom crest and coat of arms engraved and electrotyped for Acton. Moore noted his 50 years as Clerk and Treasurer and 40 years on the Council Board. Reeve Mason praised the thoughtful gift commemorating the town’s history and its Old Country crest.
The observance aims to benefit the apple industry and related sectors by increasing publicity and consumption of apples. It calls for community participation and healthful cheer, urging Canadians to contact the Fruit Growers' Association or the Canadian Horticultural Council for guidance, and invites all to an event at St. Alban’s Parish Hall on October 27 at 7 35 for a Sunday Echo entertainment.
At the regular council session Councillors Holmes and Atkinson attended Reeve Mason presiding. Knox congregation holds an annual supper on Monday evening with Rev E Lee of Erin delivering an illustrated talk on London England. Tea served 6 to 8, admission 25 cents, followed by a “Safety First” comedy in the Town Hall by St Alban’s Dramatic Club under the Women’s Association.
Jack Donahue of Toronto faced Police Magistrate Shields for intoxication after being found with canned heat and given six months in jail. Q. Sidey, convicted of stealing chickens in York County, was sentenced to two years in Kingston Penitentiary. Bernard Howard of Toronto was convicted of liquor possession after a late night found with a bottle in Lorne Park. he was fined $50 and costs.
The International Live Stock Exhibition will run November 27 to December 4 at the Chicago Union Stock Yards marking its 27th anniversary. Secretary-Manager B H Helde says the event will be the most balanced in its long history with top breeders showcasing beef cattle horses sheep and hogs for the final honors of the season. Champions from major stock shows across the continent and Canada will compete in the Court of Last Resort, bringing generations of breeding to a single dazzling display.
The Young People’s League of the United Church held a Mock Parliament on Monday night with Frank Cook elected Premiership candidate amid Government, Opposition and Progressive factions. Returning officer was Mr Arlof Dills. poll clerk Mr A T Brown. scrutineer Roy Johnston and Roy McKeown.
