Recreation director Jim Casburn oversees ice plant prep at the arena as pipes are tested to reach 13 degrees for flooding a smooth surface. Sand floor leveled, pipes checked, and last minute adjustments completed. Casburn hopes cool weather continues for an early start to a full winter program attracting hockey and skating enthusiasts to the arena.
Esquesing Township total population reaches 6514, up 310 from last year. Assessor Art Benton told Council the 1962 assessment totals 8 981 492 dollars, rising 692 626 from 1961 with 46.21 percent farm 36.75 residential and 17.04 industrial land. There are 30 assessment appeals this week, linked to a new 44 change in assessment procedure under Department of Municipal Affairs guidance.
Twenty five skaters joined the newly formed figure skating club under recreation director Jim Casburn. Andrew Drenters will coach and Ross Smith will offer private lessons. Casburn noted many calls expressing interest and expects more joiners by week’s end.
Nominations for mayor reeve and council will be held November 22 at Robert Little School auditorium with an election set for December 4. Twenty one assessment appeals noted including Brewers Warehouse Corporation seeking 35 percent business tax versus 75 percent currently. Council asks county assessment committee to oppose the appeal for Acton Milton and Georgetown.
Winter on Way council members debated snow plowing gear with Mayor John H Gay noting concerns over equipment as snow piles up. Clerk Jack McGeachie reported sand and salt plans, fence needs, and promised action after talks with Ontario Water Resources Commission Beardmore and Company next week. 30 trees planted last week will be replaced and a cement island project to fix Calamity Corner was approved while sandbags on Hallowe'en street were discussed.
Acton Parks Board finalized arena ice time schedules and pricing for the coming season. Four prospective recreation committee members attended, with mayor and board members approving the plan and outlining duties, hours, and fees for skating, hockey, and public use.
Council members heard reports of vandalism across streets including pulled signs scratched cars broken aerials and apples and carrots stolen from gardens. Residents urged enforcement while a by law to hold parents responsible was discussed as town engineers and O W R C reportedly clash over policy.
A 17 year old Acton youth confessed to stealing a spare tire rim and car accessories from Thompson Motors after three youths were spotted near CN R station. The goods were recovered by constable Mervin Harness and the youth appeared in court remanded pending magistrate decision.
