Town Assessment Shows 46.2 Percent Industrial-Commercial

Council heard 1962 totals with total town assessment $7,635,925 and 46.2 percent Industrial-Commercial. Residential assessment is $3,774,815. Commercial $1,070,790. Industrial $2,170,800. exempt $619,520. New building raised the $200,000 year‑over‑year increase. Assessments appeals due by October 14. The Oakville resolution on minor liability was approved. New Councillor Alec Johnson took oath. Smith appointed to Committee of Adjustment. Police cost review and five‑year capital projections demanded by Department of Municipal Affairs.

Fire Destroys Flour Mill Garage in $3000 Blaze

A Sunday fire destroyed Meo Limisay's garage adjoining a flour mill causing about $3000 in damage. Firefighters battled flames shooting from the structure with water streams and nearby elevators used to contain the spread. Gas tank explosions and careless children smoking are suspected causes. investigations follow as watchers noted scorched debris and notes found near the scene.

Thieves Steal Two Cars From Berjay Car Sales

Thieves broke into Berjay Car Sales after 1 am Monday, ransacked the office, smashed a safe, and drove off with two company cars a 1957 and a 1980 model. The cars were found later the same day, the 1957 model abandoned in a farm laneway and the 1980 model in a ditch near a sideroad by Georgetown. Herb Jobb and Ross Ballentine run the business. Constable Ron Rupert investigated.

Acton Limestone Quarry Begins Operation and Open House

Canada’s Acton Limestone Quarries starts full production at the Acton site two miles southeast of Acton. The plant, designed by Barbe Greene Company, features a 2000 ton per hour primary crusher and a 54 inch belt system with 12 Syntron feeders. An open house will showcase the new rig and 300 years of prospective ore, with the site offering stockpiles up to 50,000 tons and a 1600 ton bin capacity at the siding. The project, led by John Moore and John B Regan, aims for flexible quarrying and 40 million tons of limestone with more to come.

Community Centre approves new PA system and skating classes

The board approved a $1565 Acton TV Service sound system improving announcements and music for skating at the Community Centre. A seven speaker arena system, portable mics, and new time clock are planned with staff to start October 5 at $67.50 weekly. Figure skating classes rise to 65, with a 20 week term and fees from $6 to $12.

Open House At Fire Hall This Saturday

Firemen invite the public to visit the fire hall Saturday afternoon. Fire trucks and equipment will be on view and brigade members will answer questions. Children may climb into the drivers seat and refreshments will be served.
