Monitoring Station Under Construction North of Acton
A 2400 square foot monitoring station is being built one mile north of Acton on Fred Mellor's farm. Operated by the Department of Transport, it will replace the Brantford site, monitor all radio frequencies, and record them. Welton Construction Company of Guelph handles building with Harald Hagness supervising. Foundations are dug, with five towers planned. four 50 foot high by Welton and one 150 foot by the department. The one story cement block and brick building will house a generator room, operating room, offices, workshop, darkroom, and washrooms. Two Transport staff are expected on duty.

Maple Tree Planted At High School United Nations Day
On United Nations Day a maple tree was planted at the high school in a brief ceremony led by Randy Daly. Gardening reps Bruce Casburn and John Dunn assisted while the Glen Club under Helens Benton sang O Canada. Ted Hansen opened the auditorium program. Grade 12 rep Bonnie McDougall chaired. Jill Hurst spoke on UNICEF. Randy Daly introduced the film Ten Years from Colombo. A flag identification contest was won by Brian Sherdan and Margaret Mackenzie at noon.

Trigger Happy Three Acton Boys Targeted by Shotgun Fire
Three young Acton boys Philips Drysdale Bob Holmes and Keith Andrews were shot at while walking along former radial tracks behind Crescent. Phillip Drysdale was injured with a pellet removed from the neck at Guelph hospital while Bob Holmes sustained minor wounds and Keith Andrews escaped. A pellet too deep to extract remained in Drysdale and all three narrowly escaped severe harm.

Firemen respond to stove fire at Collins farm home
A malfunctioning space heater near George Collins's farm home near Nawagaweva prompted a Wednesday night dispatch. Firemen returned to the hall after a false alarm from the radio system, then proceeded to the Collins residence where the heater flare up had turned the bottom of the unit bright red. After Collins shut off the control the fire died and he notified the fire department.

Chlorine danger avoided after late OWRC decision
Ontario Water Resources Commission reversed its ruling too late to stop a heavy chlorine dose used to sterilize Acton's new Churchill Road oil reservoir tanks. Council learned the 50 parts per million had been dumped, but officials expect dilution to 12 ppm then to under 1 ppm before any reservoir discharge into fields. No harm to cattle anticipated. tanks will be flushed and dechlorinated before operation.
