Firefighters conducted a 59 second surprise drill at the public school during Fire Prevention Week. Chief Sam Tennant reported students exited quickly from the old high school, old public school, and new wing as inspectors checked modern equipment in good condition.
Mrs Roach of Church Street gathered a bowl of large luscious raspberries this week and plans to continue picking until frost as blossoms on the canes promise more fruit. She has enjoyed berries throughout summer and into fall.
The YMCA hosts a Lake Ontario swim contest for the junior gym class. Teams will track mileage on a Lake Ontario map as activity points accumulate toward a year long competition. Prizes await the first team to reach the far shore in theory.
Keith Avery of Waterdown died when his milk truck veered off the Hamilton Guelph highway about a mile south of the Ontario Agricultural College and struck a tree. He had survived a previous collision when his truck was hit by a C N R train at Rockwood level crossing on September 21, escaping injury that time.
The YMCA nursery school welcomed 38 pre schoolers on its first day. Teachers include Lillian Woods Janet Rogers Gwen Price Nan Hurst Mary Phelan Kay Graham and Olive Cairns. Classes run Monday Wednesday and Friday mornings. most children soon joined games and songs despite some tears.

The MCA Track and Field club is registered with the CNAAU and eligible to compete. The boys practice Monday evenings and transport arrangements are being made for the National Track Meet in Buffalo and a meet in Montreal during the winter.
County Council approved a plan to form a fact finding committee to review creating three high school area boards replacing North Halton High School Area. Appointees will be named at the November meeting amid concerns from northern townships over scope and rapid growth.
Y secretary Bob Brayshaw expanded offerings to 33 classes this year, yet some grew larger than last year. The woodworking class split into two with 12 on a waiting list, a new bowling and wrestling club formed, and badminton teams plan matches with Brampton Kitchen er and Guelph.
In Acton Magistrate Court one of the longest dockets recently heard, eight convictions were secured, one dismissal, and remand on another for a week with six others laid over. An 18-year-old accused of impaired driving was fined 50 dollars plus costs and three months suspension of license. Other district youths faced fines and suspensions for careless driving, with details of an accident on Main Street. Three Acton men admitted theft of nails and cement, with restitution. one had a liquor charge dismissed. A minor faced unlawful liquor possession with a 100 dollar fine. An Acton man pleaded guilty to four charges of cashing Family Allowance cheques, with 50 dollar fines per charge.

Mr and Mrs Garnet McKenzie Mr and Mrs Elmer Smith Mr and Mrs Mansell Nellis and Mr and Mrs Clarence Rognvaldson joined sessions and banquets at the enlarged Sudbury Y M C A. McKenzie chaired district governors meeting with Ed Miller of New Jersey and Wilf Roberts. a special program for the ladies was held.
Night school committee met in the high school to finalize class holdings for the year. Leather embossing was cancelled for low enrolment while three sewing classes will be split into two. upholstering and oil painting will be taught by named instructors from Guelph and Georgetown with several other courses confirmed. Registration opens October 31 and November 1 with letters to enrollees explaining the first class date.
A student from Ceylon at Ontario Agricultural College addressed the So-Ed club at the YMCA. Jay Aseelan discussed Ceylon’s history, economics, languages, education, and exports, noting rubber overproduction’ wartime effect and rice as staple food. He answered questions as Bruce Shoemaker offered thanks.
A surprise gathering celebrated the 46th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Griffen at their home. A Thanksgiving dinner followed at Mr. and Mrs. William Thompson’s home with attendees from Eminum Vineland Acton Sudbury and Acton. The couple received many gifts.
