Fires kill 78 children in 17 winter family blazes
Survey of 91 fatalities from 17 fires shows 78 children among victims. Two Christmas fires killed 10 and 9 kids. other holiday fires added 26 child deaths. Causes include fuel oil in a wood burning box stove, electric hot plate ignition, and a one cent piece used as a fuse, with other fires due to gas lines, overloaded wiring, smoke, and faulty equipment. Where final verdicts gave nothing, the cause was unknown.
