The 50 workers at St Lawrence Starch Co in Port Credit Ontario faced a strike called by AFL Chemical Workers Union leaders with little member input. Half of 180 employees joined, picket incidents occurred, and after fifteen days the leadership called off the action leaving strikers to question their leaders.
Ontario road toll rose last October with 89 deaths including 27 people aged 35 to 65. Officials warn midlife adults face higher risk in early darkness while pedestrians should wear white in poorly lit areas and during evening rush hours.
Officials note less traffic in fall and winter but higher danger on country roads. Early darkness and nasty weather push rural accidents to 46 percent of Ontario’s total. Certificates cost four dollars for five dollar denominations and redeem at five dollars with other denominations in proportion. About 31 million dollars remained outstanding at the final issue date October 15 1946, with redemptions likely through banks.
