Acton struggles to hit half its War Savings quota with 46 percent achieved this week. Canvassers have begun work, with records and stamp books issued to ease regu lar pledges. Awards will honor stores with 100 percent staff participation. quotes urge prudent saving and bond purchases backed by Canada.
Observers think Hitler aims to hold the front from Leningrad to well south of Moscow while concentrating a main assault on the Caucasus and oil fields. Rumors claim German allies like Romania Italy and Hungary are active on various fronts as the Russians may defend Moscow and Leningrad next year. Winter has set in and fronts stretch about 2 000 miles making major offensives harder, continued on page five.
Esquesing township council met with all members present. Reeve W A Wilson led as letters discussed include request for a 20 mile speed limit in Stewarttown and relief from dust, and legal changes to auditing appointments. The treasurer was authorized to pay numerous accounts and a by-law reissuing a school section debenture was authorized for drafting.
McCutcheon bowling team beat A and P Stores 2-1 as A and P won game three with a 100 pin handicap. Scores feature M Roote 215 166, N Morton 287 220, M Holmes 312, J Adamson 201 184, W Corry 232 0, C Leishman 297 160 387, totaling 1127 1006 976 3099 for McCutcheon and 1837 967 1045 3049 for A and P.
The regular meeting at Mrs. W R Elliott’s home drew a large crowd. E E Barr the Regent presided as the unit planned a $150 contribution to the War Service League and discussed magazine collections and War Saving campaigns. Members reported Red Cross items and a questionnaire on the Order.
A Guelph official explains unemployment benefits law. Workers are not forced to take a low wage or poor conditions. Appeals possible to Board of Referees and then to the Umpire for denied claims. Benefits depend on capability to work and sickness exclusions apply.
Acton High School pupils organized a dance to support Tur Farr Paris Fund for the London England Sick Children’s Hospital. The event netted 91.55, boosting the overall total to 246.85 previously acknowledged plus a generous anonymous dollar gift. Additional contributions continue to arrive to aid the cause.
The Acton Hapilat Baptist Church marked its 68th anniversary with a special Sunday service and a spiritual music festival. Rev. J. C. Williamson of Preston preached thrice, praising shared missions in Bolivia and urging burning faith and active Christian living amid wartime concerns.
Dr E J Nelson leaves Acton after twenty years to take charge of Dr L H Leggett's office in Royal City and begins a medical and urgent practice in Guelph. He has served Acton as Medical Officer of Health and on the town council, organized the local hockey team, and contributed as organist and steward at United Church. The community regrets his departure but wishes him continued success in the Royal City.
Post Office warns parcels must be sent by November 10 to reach service members overseas for Christmas. High overseas mail volume, wartime port congestion, convoys and blackouts may delay deliveries. Send now to ensure arrival before the holiday.
Acton Junior Farmers held a Halloween party at Lorne School with prize awards for costume categories. Winners included Isabel Swackhamer best indy's costume Gordon Leslie best gent's outfit Irene and Annie Aitkins best toupee Blanche McKinnon best lady's costume Henry Nellis best gent's costume Melvin McCullough best comic Elwood Johnston most ridiculous Margaret McPhail best disguised Betty Allan best child's costume. Howard Switzer led games followed by lunch and dancing.
London dispatch reports Major Gordon Pudney 21 of Thornton Heath is believed to be the youngest regimental sergeant major in the British army.
A special Acton council meeting considered Dr. F. E. J. Nelson's letter resigning as Medical Officer of Health effective immediately. The council accepted the resignation with regret, ordered payment of accounts, and instructed the clerk to advertise for applications to fill the post to continue school immunization work. Councillors F. Davigan E. Jones and Reeve J. B. Chalmers attended.
Acton district clergy and council arrange Remembrance Day services for Acton Nassagaweya and Rockwood with acts at Soldiers Memorials and church services. The program honors those who fell in World War I under the line Their Name Liveth Forevermore and invites all residents to attend.
Erin township council met in Hillburg on November 3 1941 approving a supplementary road bylaw to seek an extra 1000 dollars for roads and bridges. The treasurer was allowed to pay school money in three installments December 16 1941 March 1 1942 and June 1 1942. A ratepayer meeting is planned for December 20 in the Town Hall Hillsburg.
The Dublin Literary Society held a Hallowe'en social at the school on Friday eve with judges awarding prizes to Helen Holmes, Meave Breen, Molly Cutts, Mr. G Somerville, Betty Burkholder and Joan Somerville, and Howard Switzer. The program featured readings, a masquerade, a raisin eating contest, a Camp Fire Girls display, and dancing after lunch. The gathering also discussed galvage collection for the Acton War Services League.
Rt Rev J Ryan bishop of Hamilton confirmed a group at St Josephs Church on Wednesday evening October 29. The list includes Joseph Gillevet Ross Boyle James Golden Donald Milton and many others with both boys and girls named.
The Mary R Moore Girls Guild held its regular monthly meeting at Miss Doris Blow's home. Ynez McLellan led in prayer, Mary Ritchie read scripture, and Isobel McLeod presented the secretary's report with Inez McLellan handling business. Joyce Dessercault gave an interesting reading and Mrs Malnprize offered a helpful talk. Darla Blow provided an intelligence fest and all enjoyed a social time.
The November meeting of the Woman's Association of the United Church was held at Mrs. David Richardson's home with Mrs. Symon presiding and giving the devotional. Plans were laid to entertain Halton County laymen at the United Church on November 19 and to continue work through fall and winter. A social lunch followed and thanks were given to Mrs. Richardson for her hospitality.

St Alban’s Guild Tea and Sale on a Saturday in Pariah Hall 3 to 6 pm. Remembrance Day Auction at Ballinafad Community Hall Tuesday November 11 at 7 pm featuring fruit dressed poultry livestock baking and other items. Auctioneers promote not to miss the event.
