Ontario Bill Gives Elderly Tax Credits at Province Cost

The Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs introduced the Municipal and School Tax Credit Assistance Act 1967 to allow municipalities and school boards in unorganized territories to pass by laws for tax credits. Credits equal to half of property taxes up to 150 dollars yearly would be available to resident owners 65 and over, with the province reimbursing the municipalities. The Burlington private bill already offers 100 dollar relief with means testing and a ten year residency, including an outright gift instead of deferment. The minister argues relief should not burden other ratepayers, and expects more demand for provincial help from municipalities. The elderly, often with limited income, would gain needed support to remain in their homes.
