The high school annual At Home dance featured an oriental theme with dim lighting, bamboo drapes, lanterns, a life size Buddha, a teahouse stage, and a moonlit decor. Principal Hansen, trustees, Mayor Duby, and student leaders greeted guests as Harvey Smith Orchestra played.
A three member Acton Citizens Band delegation asked the Parks Board about enlarging the Prospect Park bandstand or constructing a new larger building for the band and visitors. The board discussed the proposal briefly with delegates Teter Jr John McHugh and Bing Ramsden and set a later meeting to consolidate renovation ideas. Roy Arnott was reengaged as park caretaker for the season. Joe T. Hurst resigned as board member after becoming joint secretary of Parks Board and Recreation Committee. Two committees were formed for the year: administration led by Cliff Bradley with Nino Bralda and a new member. booth chaired by Mrs. George Fever with H. A. Hinton and Alec Johnson.
Garry Crispin won a prize in the V.M.CAJs model airplane club for being the best all round. He flew Saturday from Guelph airport in a two seater Cantehk with instructor Peter Pudge for about 28 minutes over Guelph learning controls dives and turns. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Mel Crispin and he has flown with his uncle Don Seddon before. Six other Acton club members share enthusiasm to keep the group active through the summer.
A Thursday evening blaze gutted the Erin Township barn owned by Mr and Mrs Sam Snow. About 30 head of dairy cattle were rescued by the owners and neighbors fought the flames to spare outbuildings and a home. The cause remains unknown and damages are not yet estimated.
The special spring green section covers the chamber of commerce council and firefighters with ads from merchants. It highlights community efforts and upcoming events as part of the local news package.
Construction updates show the new Pineview school taking shape on the Noo Re side road with foundation completed and brickwork soon to start. Local planners note progress toward opening in the near term.
John Goy was announced as Acton Citizen of the Year by Chamber president Paul Nielsen at the annual banquet. Goy, a former mayor and longtime public figure, received a standing ovation and credited his success to team efforts in municipal, recreational, and business fields.
Mohawk Raceway in Campbellville opened Friday to a large appreciative crowd as the Jockey Club celebrated a major investment. The new track drew thousands for the ribbon cutting and harness racing debut, with significant wagering and high prices noted across the first weekend. Local residents and visitors from Halton County and surrounding areas filled the stands, impressed by the facility built at a cost of about 3 million dollars over two years.
John Henry Gay was honored as Acton Citizen of the Year for 1963 at the Chamber of Commerce banquet. The citation praised his service as a citizen, business executive, sportsman, and civic leader, notably for financing and building the Acton Community Centre and his six terms on the Acton Council.
The Hatton Musi Festival Association announced the last rural festival marking the end of Chadsa rother chapter in the Hatton Mass bestival. The annual report cites a final set of awards and a year end balance of $1,376 with an additional $1,000 fund. About 8,900 competed in county music festivals over the past year.
