The town workforce and staff observe a Dominion Day holiday per the official calendar. Most shops close ahead of Monday with a midweek pattern. The Chamber of Commerce retail section designates Wednesday as tighter closing with Monday open. The Fres Press plant closes Friday while the office remains open Monday.
The St John Cadets enjoyed wieners and games Saturday evening at the home of leader Mrs. E Heffer nan. Mrs George Hargrave co hosted for the eight cadets as informal summer sessions begin.
Acton Curling Club asks for an additional midweek curling night at the community centre as membership grows. The Recreation Committee weighs ice-time limits, costs, and contract options while noting ice making and staffing constraints. A resignation of recreation director Jim Casburn is accepted with best wishes. recruitment for a replacement begins.
Evengel Baptist seeks land owned by Anthony Sev nuck to build a $25,000 church 28 by 48 feet with future expansion to 70 by 80 feet. Planning board refused land separation and asked for a full subdivision plan for the entire area before proceeding. Pastor Alan G Silvester and solicitor C F Leatherland presented proposals as council representatives discussed frontage and servicing needs. A resignation from chairman Ken Hardman was received as Vice-chair Aldo Braldy presided.
Principal announces promotion lists for the high school with names promoted to Grade 10 in four year and three year programs. The mail includes reports for four year pathways and honors designations for several students.
An Acton man, 25 year old John Lulward Lambert of 50 Fisterick Street, was hospitalized in Hamilton with two broken legs and multiple injuries after a single car crash in Milton. His car struck a tree near Bronte Street CPR crossing, burst into flames, and Lambert was freed after 15 minutes by passersby and responders. He was treated at Milton District Hospital then transferred to Hamilton Hospital for surgery.
Acton plans to call four extra policemen for July 11 to assist traffic and parking during the Orange Lodge parade in Avion where crowds of over 10 000 are expected. The decision was made at a council meeting.
A regular North Halton Urban Board meeting in Georgetown last week featured councilors from Milton Georgetown and Acton discussing multiple topics. Talks covered a proposed Acton district fair a basic school planning framework possible government takeover of education control centennial projects dog control and an industrial promotion budget with Acton Mayor Les Duby outlining Ontario Municipal Act provisions.
Speedy hydroplane event at Acton park draws a crowd of about eight thousand for the second annual regatta. Evan Stone of the Oskville Chub suffers whiplash in a crash but returns after hospital care. Prize money totals $1000 with Eddie Heffernan winning $500, Ter Leste Morris $250, Dick Willie $100, Doug Price $100, and May Hoare $50.
During a heavy rainfall Acton firefighters responded twice. They saved a tannery fire at Beardmore and Co and then tackled a dead elm struck by lightning near Kett Campbellville. The second blaze was extinguished quickly but the rural truck got stuck in mud on the return.
