Acton Council proclaims July 5 as a civic holiday and discusses closing YMCA public toilets due to misuse. Tenders for a two ton truck with snow plow are awarded to W R Norton for 2000 dollars. The meeting covers fuel distribution, smoke complaints at Armaco and Baxter laboratories, and town awards for the Dominion Victory Loan contest naming Acton a bomber.

At a Saturday Arm Acton School Board meeting Mr E Smith formerly of Rockwood was chosen principal of Acton Public School. He has ten years teaching, nine in Alton and one at Rockwood as principal. He holds elementary certificates in Music Physical Culture and Manual Training. Salary next year is 1600 dollars. He will relocate to Acton when a home is found.
Acton Committee of the Navy League of Canada reports Tag Day results held last Saturday. Sale of tags to general public amounted to 94.41 with additional receipts noted.
War Service League met on a hot June evening to plan Christmas boxes and summer supplies for overseas relief. Treasurer cited 7276.91 dollars since founding with receipts from Duke of Devonshire Chapter and others. donations included 50 dollars to Greek Relief Fund. Industry reps attended and a salvage room schedule was postponed for a larger gathering.
Weerd assigns from the care of Acton to be christened July 5 with invitations issued for July 1. Clergy, military and community representatives will attend the ceremony at the plant linked to Canada aircraft production.
Hon John Bracken leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada will tour Halton County in July visiting Acton Milton and Toronto events. He will address one meeting in Halton at Milton on July 1 and another in Toronto on July 2, with an Acton stop during the day.
The B Y P regular meeting was held Tuesday evening in the church. Miss J Graham read scripture and Miss E Gaspar led in prayer. A quiet Saturday wedding united Fock Wingate of Petawawa and Miss Briarcliffe Dennis at Mrs. George H. Dennis home. Rev. John Ward officiated as bride wore a Pacific blue Moon gown and carried Briarcliffe roses. Bridesmaid Miss Helen Passmore wore pale pink net. Groomsman Pte. Jack Davies of Prince George BC attended. The couple left for a short Muskoka trip.
Acton Public Utilities Commission met Monday with C W Hansen and J H MacArthur present. The panel reviewed quotations for a fence at the pump house but decided to leave the matter to the council since the fence involves municipal property. Secretary B H Speight was instructed to renew the Dulles truck insurance. Superintendent C W Wilson reported that based on data from the HEP C, the three 3744 KW A transformers could be installed at Wool Combing Corporation property or the 100 KW A transformers already in place would be used. This would accommodate added load from a plant expansion. He also said ISEPC was asked to rent their old filter to clean transformer oil before use and that Wool Combing Corp requested moving their transformers to another location to clear room for the new addition, scheduled for the third week of July. The secretary was instructed to pay Hydro Dept Bell Telephone, Inspection Dept meter inspection, and Cannon Electric Co. etc. Several arrears cases were set for possible service disconnection if settlements are not made promptly.
The Wool Combing Corporation in Acton plans a new brick two story addition totaling 15 000 square feet to storage and machine shop use with a dining area for employees. Construction by Georgetown Lumber Co begins next week with completion expected around October 1st.
The Duke of Devonshire Chapter of the 10.DE held a Friday evening picnic in Acton Park with Lakeside Chapter guests. A bountiful supper preceded events including a time race won by Miss Emma Cole and Mrs J Adamzon, an orange race, kicking shoe, skipping, and clothes pin contests won or tied among several named participants.
Acton seeks volunteers for Red Cross blood collection. A minimum of sixty five donors is required. more than fifty have volunteered so far. The unit arrives Wednesday morning June 30 if enough people come forward. Call W Benson or G Rognvaldson at 63 or any committee member to offer to donate.
The Acton Branch Bible Society held its annual meeting in the Parish Hall with Rev. E. A. Brooks presiding. Rev. R. F. Thomson was elected President and A. T. Brown Secretary-Treasurer. Rev. W. McCleary spoke on London and wartime bombing impacts, noting the Bible Society headquarters were destroyed. The society continues sending Bibles worldwide, avoiding Europe due to blackout, with demand rising in South America and China and 18 000 parcels shipped via the Burma Road before its closure. Collectors begin next Monday hoping for strong response to keep the work going.
Ten pupils from Acton School and three from nearby townships write exams today under Principal M M Leitch of the Continuation School presiding. An entrance class of thirty two pupils was enrolled at Acton School this year.
