School children visited the Halton County Council, learning council procedures and meeting officials. Grants of 208 dollars went to Milton, and 100 dollars each to Acton and Georgetown, with a tax rate reduction of a tenth of a mill.
E Hufnagel has enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and is stationed at Manning Pool Toronto. EK Yungblatt has joined the RC Army Air Force and is stationed in Toronto.
Mr R W Lowrie learned through Ottawa External Affairs and the Red Cross that his son, Stewart Lowrie, is among Canadian civilians held in a Singapore internment camp. The note explains mail procedures and forbids parcels or money. Stewart, once a representative for Manufacturers Life in Singapore, has been reported safe but imprisoned since the capture by Japanese forces.
Recruiting committee of the Red Cross Blood Donor Campaign in Acton reports rapid growth in volunteers. Foremen in local plants assist as recruiters and any man willing to donate should contact committee members to receive a registration card. The unit will be sent only if a minimum donor number is met, so applications help both a local man overseas and the collection visit to Acton.
Plans for Acton’s Wartime Fair adjust to weather and space constraints. Organizers seek stronger stock exhibits and enhanced features for the second day. A hall shortage will be offset by added Saturday events. The fair runs Friday and Saturday September 17 and 18.
Last Thursday afternoon at three oclock the pupils and teachers of the public school gathered at the entrance to bid farewell to Principal McKenzie who has joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. The ceremony featured a junior choir readings by students and a brief address by the principal.
Former members of the First Acton Wolf Cub Pack are asked to return pack sweaters and scarves to Cubmaster Rev. E. A. Brooks at the rectory. Equipment is hard to obtain and needed to outfit current boys.
The Duke of Devonshire Chapter of LO D E presented awards to Acton Public School pupils for patriotic art and writing. Winners include Ena Jennings Maureen Kinread Ronald Anderson Joy Romph Bobby Rowles Patsy Duval Pasty Chew Jim Dennis Loraine Pallant Mauretta Rowles Martha Turkosi and Irma Kehtner.
Mrs. A Near presided as president in Dublin at the Halton Institute annual district meeting in Hornby with large attendance. Delegates discussed the central fund for patriotic donations, reports were read from 16 branches, and officers were elected including president Mrs A Near and jam convener Mrs Milligan.
Holstein and Jersey breeders from Halton and Peel counties gathered at Ontario Agricultural College Guelph for a field day. After tours of the experimental dairy plant and greenhouses, lunch followed with remarks by Dr. G I Christie and Prof. R G Knox. Judging by Geo KE Rattleby Jas Bremner and A M Barr named winners in Jersey and Holstein classes.
Police court records show fines for careless driving and liquor offenses. A $30 fine plus costs totals 55 in one case. another offender from Exwin Hills paid a $23 fine and costs totaling 2375. Chief Harrop and Police Magistrate W Hobinson oversaw the Acton Court. Douglas Hurren of Breslau was jailed overnight after intoxication and motor vehicle use on Hower Avenue.
Mr. J. Robert MacArthur was honored at Walker Lodge meeting as he received the Past Masters Jewel. Immediate Past Master MacArthur was praised for his service while longtime member W. M. Cooper, with forty four years in the lodge, was recognized for his devoted participation.
Royal Navy escorts four destroyers to the North Atlantic convoy. Canada’s Navy expands to fifty-five destroyers and numerous merchant ships. Acton unites to support the Navy League via a Saturday tag day. local groups donate substantial sums to wartime efforts.
The Jude meeting of the Women's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church was held at the home of Mrs. Wm McDonald on Thursday the th with Mrs Fred Blow presiding. The devotional period was led by Mrs Lashby Mrs Weight Mrs Geo Lantz and Mrs Harry Malnprize. Mrs Cordiner read a few verses of Scripture God's Precious Promise. The meeting closed with prayer by Mrs Forbes Thomson. Mrs McDonald, assisted by Miss Stalker Mrs W Gould and Mrs Blow, served a dainty lunch and a social time followed.
The Ministry of Labor in London says the toughest assignment is placing 15 Japanese released from internment as friendly aliens. No employers want to hire them.
Arthur Castle and Leroy Warren both of Toronto were sentenced to a year in the reformatory for breaking entering and theft at Acton Creamery. They are eighteen. Edward Raines, apprehended at Moosejaw, Sask, confessed to the Acton burglary and similar crimes in Weyburn Estevan and Moose Jaw. Police say another suspect remains unidentified. Chief Harrop and Traffic Officer Ray Mason led cross‑division effort that brought the $241.30 theft to trial.
The BYP U met in the church Tuesday evening with the president in charge. W Anderson led the singing and read the Scripture. W Coles sang Sweet Will of God. Len Atkinson led prayer. Stan Cripps spoke on Eliah's Prayer. J Graham sang I’d Rather Have Jesus. JH Son gave a reading. Mrs Reta Lincoln offered a hymn and closing prayer.
Beatrice Mitford aged 63, wife of a retired officer, agreed to drive bread without pay after the local bakery lost its driver to military service. She joined the effort in Budleigh, England, delivering loaves to customers in the absence of paid staff.
