Pantelleria siege marks first aerials forcing fortress surrender
The Pantelleria campaign set a wartime record as aerial bombardment reduced a fortress to capitulation after 20 days. Axis defenses, about 8000 troops, faced 3500 tons of bombs in ten days, with naval support and night IFR raids contributing to the surrender. Roosevelt urged Italians to revolt against Mussolini to avert further destruction.
