Fifth candidate Gillies joins Halton East campaign
William D. Gillies, 46, an Oakville councillor, announced his bid for the New Democratic Party nomination in Halton East. He is the fifth hopeful to seek a major party nomination as Liberal Robin Skuce and Murray Haesler and PC Bill Bateman and William Sabgant also pursue Oakville seats. Rumors point to an election likely in late May or early June. Gillies, a Niagara Falls native, served in WWII and Korea, moved to Oakville in 1958, works at BP refinery, and is active in politics with wife Mildred and daughter Bonnie-Lyn. John Gilbert, NDP MSP, will speak at the NDP nomination meeting at Club Galaxy on Tuesday Jan 31. No other candidates have announced.

The first centennial flag to fly in Acton was raised last Thursday afternoon in a simple ceremony. Legion treasurer Gord McCutcheon hoisted the blue and white flag beneath the Canadian flag at the flagpole with an audience of none.

Acton council narrowly backs sewage plant extension

Over 150 veterans attend annual Acton Legion dinner
More than 150 veterans filled the Acton Legion Hall for the annual veterans dinner. Guests at the head table included Mayor Les Duby, OPP Detachment chief Mick Holmes, fire chief, local clergy, and Legion leaders who praised the corps' record and discussed Centennial plans. Attendees enjoyed a hot roast beef meal, entertainment, and a Saturday night dance with spouses.

O.P.P. Conducts Safety Lectures for 200 Children
The Acton O.P.P. orchestrated a safety education week from January 15 to 2, instructing about 200 public school students including grades four to six at Robert Little School. During the period, 230 work hours and 822 miles of patrol produced four traffic charges and 16 warnings, one minor accident causing $55 damage, and three minor sundry incidents. Magistrates in Milton fined three men $140.50 plus $18.50 costs for impaired driving and speeding. A constable cautioned a youth on discretionary grounds, and Cpl Ray Mason warned that failure to heed could invite harsher discipline.

Two Accidents Cause Damage in Acton Ontario
Constable Bruce McArthur of the Acton O P P reported damage totaling about 300 after two vehicle crashes Sunday and Monday. Ann Symon of Willow Street waited to turn on Mill Street East when Stuart Johnson of Elizabeth Drive rear ended her car. damages were about 175 and 125 respectively. A second crash occurred when William Near backed into a parked Drysdale vehicle, causing about 100 in damage.
