United Rubber Workers vote sparks conciliation drive

The United Rubber Workers Local 603 reported a Sunday vote favoring strike action if no agreement on a seven day workweek is reached. Union officials and the conciliation board will present the situation to members. failure to accept could trigger a strike within seven days. John Hagerman acted as plant manager for Acton while discussions with the Local 603 bargaining committee continued since last October.

Halton boards debate north-south boundary over Plunkett plan

Halton area boards push for a north-south boundary maintaining Halton as a unit while Acton Milton Georgetown favor a two tier system. Representatives from Oakville Burlington and Nassagaweya back a county boundary with a Halton board, urging timely briefs to Municipal Affairs by January 15. The Plunkett proposed east-west boundary faced strong opposition.

New Parks and Recreation Boards Debate Policy Changes

Breaks in School piping disrupts building services

Public school caretakers faced two underground heating pipe breaks last week. Town workers used a compressor and drills to breach cement and repair the damage in the principal G. W. McKenzie’s office and the hallway rear of the auditorium. Restoring matching floor covering and cleaning dusted rooms added to the work.

Inaugural Hydro Meet in New Building on Alice Street

Acton Hydro Commission held its inaugural meeting in the recently completed hydro building on Alice Street. Hydro chairman E G Tyler Sr and fellow directors returned to office as the town prepares for its Centennial year. The group praised Whitney Construction for finishing the building, noted a $4 000 saving on wiring, and set plans for future expansion and an opening timing likely in warmer weather.

Nassagaweya Two consider two industries in township

Nassagaweya Township Council heard proposals to establish two industries in Nassagaweya Township. Law Construction Co. Ltd. may buy 743 acres near Guelph Junction to build a 40 by 80 foot repair depot and offices, with gravel operations discussed but conditional on market and truck impact. Council referred the matter to the Planning Board for recommendations.
