Halton council narrows Good Roads attendance at Toronto

Debate over attendance limits at the Ontario Good Roads Convention in Toronto led Halton County Council to approve attendance for the assistant engineer and road foreman along with the engineer and committee chair. The one seminar prior to the convention was approved for all who wished to attend.

The city hydro commission discussed tenders for janitor services at the new Hydro building on Alice Street. Five bids ranged from 20 per week to 250 per month, with no decision reached, and the panel decided to hire a full-time utility man for summer duties.

Sign contract ends strike risk at Micro Plastics plant

A last minute agreement averted a potential strike at Micro Plastics plant. A new two year contract was signed Monday evening, expiring October 31, 1968, after union members voted unanimously against a seven day work week proposal. Negotiations began last October with conciliation board reports received last weekend. Plant manager John Hagerman confirmed the contract and full settlement.

Halton County Council Sets Pay and Travel for 1967

Halton County Council approved a bylaw at its January meeting setting pay and travel allowances for councillors. Daily attendance pay is 20 dollars, with 20 dollars per day while serving as a delegate away from residence. Travel reimbursement is 10 cents per mile for the first 7,000 miles, eight cents for the next 7,000, and seven cents beyond 14,000 miles, with full travel and registration costs for train or plane travel. Per-diem fees may be requested before attending out of municipality meetings, otherwise payments are quarterly in March, June, September and December. One third of the remuneration is tax-free as expense allowance.

Marching Mothers raise funds in Acton campaign blitz

Mrs. Don VanFleet chairs the Marching Mothers campaign campaigners toured Acton Monday night and reported a successful drive with 727.10 raised for the canvass. Donations counted at her home Tuesday as area captains gathered in. Additional returns expected from homes not reached Monday. Envelopes left at doors, business cards, and shoppers’ dimes to boost total. Industries’ proceeds to come. Last year’s total was 540.00.

Storm blocks schools arena town crews work through night

Winter returns with heavy snow and ice as storms close schools and delay buses. Town crews plow through Thursday night into Friday, downtown streets clear slowly, and authorities report no accidents amid treacherous conditions. Private drives and walks remain hazardous as snow removal continues.

Esquesing Township councillors reported that residential assessment surpassed farming assessment for the first time in 1966. Residential assessment stood at 40.81 percent of the total, while farming was 40.27 percent, with industrial and commercial at 18.92 percent.

Acton Chevaliers Set to Sing at Expo Montreál

Expo officials confirm Acton Chevaliers will perform July 2 at 11 30 and 3 30 and July 3 at 1 30 and 5 30 at band shell B on St Helen's Island in Montréal. The group planned 40 minutes of tuneful lively numbers with English and French announcements.

At the annual meeting on Saturday January 28 eighteen directors were elected to organize Acton's Centennial Fall Fair for 1967. Jack Marshall reviewed a record 1966 gate and prize money while urging co operation with rural and urban groups for the September centennial celebration. New officers to be named February 7.

Ac ton Centennial Library Set for June 3 Opening

The official opening date for Ac ton's centennial library is scheduled for Saturday, June 3, the day before Decoration Day. The library will open as soon as possible after the move from the YMCA building, likely in March, with shelving awaited to begin progress. Meantime, the Mbrariams continue packing at the old site.

Plunkett report sees low chance of action on Halton Peel plan

The Ontario Municipal Affairs Department faces little likelihood of action this year on the Peel Halton two-borough proposal for Halton and Peel Counties. Special adviser J Cumming notes many councils opposed the plan and submissions closed Tuesday. The review by Thomas Plunkett will be studied by several departments before any draft recommendations reach the Legislature. Also announced are staff changes at The Acton Free Press with Henry Deveau moving to accounting, Don Ryder to advertising and circulation, and Hartley Coles taking on full editorial duties.
