The inaugural Halton County Council meeting in Milton East at 2 p.m. elected Jas L Hewson as Warden by unanimous vote after nominations for Warden were withdrawn by several candidates. The minutes of 1937 were read, damages claims discussed, and committees and by laws set for 1938 with by laws to borrow funds and appoint auditors.

Chuck Conacher, captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, retires from professional hockey on doctor ordered leave. The nine year veteran, known for one of the hardest shots in the league, ends his career with the Maple Leafs as the second of the famed Kid Line to retire.

The missionary drive raised 1303 dollars. thanks were given to Bennie and Mrs Bennie and to treasurer Wm Kenney. One of Rockwood's oldest residents and former Rockwood Academy student, John McNabb, will celebrate his ninetieth birthday Friday January 1st. Born on the adjoining farm he still lives on with his family since 1844. A staunch Presbyterian, he credits regular habits and hard work for his long life. He will be glad to hear from friends as they join in birthday wishes.

First Meeting of Knox Women's Missionary Society
The Knox Presbyterian WMS held its first meeting of the year at the Manse on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Blow led the service from Glad Tidings followed by prayers and readings by Mrs Lasby and Mrs Buchanan. Mrs Murray and Mrs Lantz offered prayers for the afflicted by war. Mrs Worden provided an instrumental number before a hymn and lunch.

Acton council approved the sale of the shoe factory building to a firm manufacturing felt novelties. The deal provides for at least fifty employees for seven years with payments starting February first. Clerk Leatherland named Gray Teskey and Hil auditing firm for the municipality. A by law repealing taxi by law 692 and a by law appointing a clerk and treasurer were read and passed.
