A Saturday noon siren caused firefighters to rush and residents to wonder as the long wail finally stopped. Initially thought to be Emergency Measures Organization activity, it was the former air raid siren atop the Force Electric plant now used as a fire siren. Dust slicked with melting snow fouled the relay switch, and hydro workers repaired the system to silence the alarm.
After six and a half years as minister of Acton United, Rev D Engel will become minister of Westmount United Church in Orillia on April 1. Mr and Mrs Engel and their three children Tom Judy and Miriam plan to move during Easter week. At the church annual meeting January 17, arrangements will begin to secure another minister. There are three United Churches in Orillia.
Hydro department workers remove the seasonal lights from the town business district signaling the end of the yuletide display. High school report cards are due by the end of the week.
In a brief one hour meeting, Acton Council granted William Erskine a 800 dollar yearly raise in 1967 and 250 dollar bump in 1968 after his qualified service as municipal assessor. Reeve Hinton opposed. Other actions include joining the Mayors and Reeves association, snow removal cost reviews, library debentures validation, committee reshuffles, and planned Mill and Main Streets signal light work. Mayor Duby noted library inspections and a seal issue on one thermopane window.
Reeve William Coulter wins a fourth year as Halton County Councillor and seventh in Nassagaweya. He becomes warden as 14 council members are sworn in by Judge Alan Sprague. New faces include Deputy Reeves Oakes Currie and Spight. Fireproofing plant on Highway 7 near Georgetown is expected to start mid February.
A crowd of over 900 gathered in darkness around a towering bonfire of dry Christmas trees on Churchill Road South. Mayor Les Duby and Paul Nielsen lit the blaze, aided by Firefighter Sam Tennant, as Acton Firefighters and St. John Ambulance provided safety. Coffee and doughnuts from Tyler Transport drew spectators early and late, with many staying to warm themselves in the subfreezing air.
Acton observes a first time half day for schools to honor Sir John A Macdonald on the 152nd anniversary of his birth. Ontario Education Department approval delayed details. schools plan centennial projects and classroom programs while a plaster figure of Macdonald is displayed at Robert Little Public School.
Inaugural meeting for Acton district high school board features oath of office administered by Middleton with Rev Dwight Engel reading from Gregory the Great. Tom Watson is unanimously reelected chairman for a second term. Chester Anderson is reappointed vice chairman. Committees remain, with McPhail, Arbic, Moffat, and others named to finance management property and transportation.
Acton Centennial Library and the new Acton Hydro building on Alice Street passed final inspections this week before final contractor payments. Representatives from the architect and engineers, along with mayor and library board officials, conducted exhaustive checks. Inspectors found nothing of major importance in the routine final review.
