The council opened with religious exercises by Rev. John Ward and prayers for the King and country. By law actions were approved, appointments made for Pound Keeper and MOH, relief duties set, and subsidies planned. Treasury items included renewing bonds and security measures, with adjournment set for February 5.
The Lakeside Chapter IO.D.E. held its monthly meeting at Miss Jessie Russell's home led by Reg ent Mrs M M Leitch. Members voted donations to the Service Centre Sailors and Minesweepers and Lord Mayor's Fund through the War Service League and planned clothing boxes for the Russian Relief Fund and a needy Northern school.
The Bloomsbury Literary Society held its regular Friday evening meeting in the school with Mr. Ross Gordon as president preacher. Theme songs carried Carry On while a New Year's Resolution was sung at roll call. Readings and acts included Jane Berberick solos, Alex Near on Canada, Donald Ferguson violin, a spelling match led by Kennedy, and an interview with Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. van Gooren.
Mrs. R. Johnson hosted the Acton Women’s Institute meeting led by Mrs. J. F. Wilds. Members praised the New Year’s resolution roll call and reported regaining relief boxes for Russian aid. Two quilts were made and another is underway along with plans for a Red Cross quilt.
The Acton Junior Farmers held their regular January meeting with President Leslie Swackhamer presiding. The program included vocal duets by Blanche McKinnon and Dorothy McKenzie, a reading by Mia Howard Graff, and a spelling match won with Howard Switzer’s aide, upheld by Jack Stewart. Lunch was served and the evening ended with dancing.
Esquesing council seated new officers including C Howard May Reeve G Wesley Murray Deputy Reeve George E Cleave George Currie and Wm A Wilson councillors after oath of office. They approved payments to Municipal World Whistier and Co LOP and others and set wage rates grants and subsidies including highway funds. A by law appointed J H Bingham health board member William Campbell weed inspector and Cecil Chisholm assessor for wards 1 2 3. Council authorized borrowing up to 50000 for current expenditures and scheduled February 1 meeting.
Acton Council hears a citizens brief urging leadership for the Pay as You Earn Ruml plan for income tax payments. The document argues the plan cancels eight months of liabilities and ties tax to actual earnings, with discussions of adoption by parliament and county officials.
Acton and District War Service League received a 74 cheque from Geo Musselle to support the Canadian Aid to Rusla Fund. Members urged more help as the warehouse filled. clothing and salvage drives continued with donations and forthcoming dances.
The Duke of Devonshire cneside Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire held its January meeting at Mrs. J. C. Matthews home with Regent Mrs. W. J. Beatty presiding. Attendees approved donations to the Prisoners of War Fund and the Nasik Hospital in India, planned a War Savings Certificate purchase, and urged used clothing for Russian relief. They will collect bottle caps, organize a travel party, welcomed two new members, and nominated a committee chaired by Honorary Regent Mrs. Barr.
The January meeting of the Scout Mothers was held at Mrs K P Watson's home with President Mrs E Masters in charge. The session opened with the Mother's Promise and reports from Mrs R Richardson and Mrs T Johnson. Discussion covered fundraising, fayettes, and knitting or sewing for Britain bombed civilians. A social hour followed with a decorative competition arranged by Mrs D Richardson. Mrs W Evans offered her home for the February gathering and lunch was provided by the hostess with thanks to Mrs Watson.
The Erin Township Municipal Council opened its 1943 session at Hillsburg in January. By law salaries were set for assessor 200 dollar treasurer 300 collector 200 relief officer 65 auditor 140 clerk 400 and councilmen 3.50 per meeting and 10c per mile. Other by laws fixed Health Board member J E Pearen and appointments for Geo Bryan Axsensor A J Lindsay Collector David Gray Treasurer Robert McCutcheon Relief Officer Brock Davis Author and Jas McKinnon Clerk. Township borrowed 3000 from Royal Bank and joined the Ontario Municipal Association. Harvey Dearing named School Attendance Officer for 1943 L McKinnon Guelph appointed Township Solicitor. Various payments recorded including printing insurance sheep destruction and Salvation Army donation.
In Acton and district Red Cross rooms workers stockpile yarn to knit socks for Russians and sailors overseas. A new quota of 100 pairs awaits completion as knitters are urged to join, with rooms open Monday to Friday afternoons for material collection and signups.
The Acton Public Utilities Commission held its first meeting with C M Hansen elected Chairman and J M McDonald as Vice Chairman. J R MacArthur and C M Hansen named as commissioners. A letter from the Ontario Municipal Electric Association was read about a Toronto convention in February. The commission set monthly meeting dates and instructed a list of water motor freeze concerns for action. Accounts were approved for payment to Hydro Ontario WERKE C N L R Express and other suppliers totaling 355.55.
Acton School Board held a special meeting to consider annual estimates for 1943. Increased salaries and costs require a small levy rise from the municipality, with a municipal treasurer requisition of 414,200, up 209 from last year. The secretary was ordered to file the request.
Guests from Acton and surrounding districts attended the Acton Branch of the Canadian Legion venison dinner at the Legion Hall. Rev. Pickleragill gave a provocative address on postwar reconstruction, stressing work for all and opposition to excessive capitalism, with attendees urged to aid national resilience after the war.
