Allies drive German force back in Europe and Asia in waning 1947

Allied advances across multiple fronts push back German and Japanese forces as 1947 ends. Fosbury Golden Wedding Celebrated in Mount Forest

Mr and Mrs Alfred Fosbury of Mount Forest observed their golden wedding on December 26. Their daughters Mrs A Grant of Collingwood and Mrs Harvey Woods of Stratford, and families attended. Sons Denis, Bob, and Frank, with Denis in the 14th Canadian Hussars, Bob in Army Pay Corps in England, and Frank with the U S Marine, along with Rev Alfred Fosbury of Acton who volunteered for chaplains depart­ment, were noted.

Annual reports at meeting of Woman's Association

The Woman's Association of the Unit Church met at Mrs Richardson's home with Mrs Ivan Harela presiding. Officers were installed, 71 sick calls and 7 bereavement letters noted, 9 new members joined, oldest member Mrs H P Moore honored, treasurer reported a satisfactory balance, social time followed lunch prepared by several members, and thanks extended to Mrs Richardson and lunch helpers.

Opera Air Rink Construction Near Bower Avenue

A snowstorm delayed the arena project on Bower Avenue but surface clearing allows rapid progress. Temporary rooms and lighting are planned to illuminate an outdoor ice surface for hockey and vision facilities, with a central location on Bower Avenue identified.

Dublin Soldiers Honored On New Year Leave At Village Social

A Dublin School social honored soldiers on leave with neighbors at a community gathering. Clifford Webster and Alex led activities, Dorothy Prank sang old time tunes, and John Black Jr. read a gift presentation praising loyalty to country. Library Board Officers Re-elected for the Year

Acton Library Board re-elected Rev. E. A. Brooks as Chairman and Mr. M. B. Leitch as Secretary-Treasurer. The financial report showed only a few cents in the treasury and due to higher book costs, the board agreed the Chairman and Secretary should seek a $100 increase in the annual grant from the Council.

Volleyball League Opens After Holiday Break

The YMCA Volleyball League resumes with single games per night after a holiday layoff. New players join, boosting teams as Creighton defeats Heard 21 14, Heard loses to MacArthur 19, MacArthur beats Creighton 21 19, and standings show Creighton 10 points, Heard and MacArthur tied at 0.

St Albans Guild Elects Officers for the Year

The January meeting at Irene Marshall’s home opened with a prayer and included the election of officers for the New Year. Elected were Vice-President Mrs Brooks, President Mrs C Neiles, Secretary Mrs B Anderson, Treasurer Mrs Gordon Currie, Lodg Convener Mrs F Stucky, Assistant Convenor Mrs C Gibbons. Mrs N Morton invited the guild to her home for the next meeting. The gathering closed with benediction and luncheon.

Open air hockey rinks recall Acton past

1943 License Plates Go on Sale Here Monday

The 1943 motor vehicle licenses and car permits go on sale Monday at the local station. Numbers start at 23K2 with orange figures on black plates, to be attached to the rear of vehicles. Last year’s license numbers appear on the permits for gasoline access.
