Members of the Chamber of Commerce will halt a planned ban on a project, gather on Wednesday to pile debris in a vacant lot near the town dump, and Mayor Les Duby will join in. A fire ambers extinguishing team will be on hand, with hot coffee and doughnuts provided to visitors.
Mr and Mrs Bruce of R R 3 Acton celebrated their 25th anniversary with a family gathering at the Gordon Johnson home. They were married January 1 1942. Guests included bridesmaid and best man Mr and Mrs Frank Bowes Camp Borden. Gifts from Bruce and Sayers families and close friends were exchanged. Lunch and wedding cake followed.
Halton and Peel counties select 83 acre site east of Hornby in North Oakville for Maplehurst Regional Detention Centre to serve Brampton Oakville and Burlington. Board expects to negotiate purchase with owner Mr Simoni with expropriation only if needed and to hire an architect. Initial capacity viewed at 150 inmates with both minimum and maximum security inmates anticipated.
On New Year’s Eve Acton celebrated Canada's centennial with a five minute bell medley led by St. Alban’s, St. Joseph’s, and Presbyterian church bells. A carillon at the Presbyterian church joined organ stops and chimes as townsfolk welcomed 100 years. Police reported a quiet night aside from minor vandalism at the centennial library.
Firefighters arriving in a snowstorm to Ospringe found no blaze at the old general store on Highway numbers 25 to 24. The alarm proved to be a home fire next door at George Fritsner’s house, investigated quickly before crews returned to headquarters. The former store is now owned by the Department of Highways.
Mr and Mrs Fred Turner of 277 Arthur Street marked their 50th wedding anniversary with a quiet home celebration on Friday December 30. Born in England they met during World War I and settled in Acton after long service in Canada. They have three children Fred Jr William and Betty with spouses and grandchildren. Mayor Les Duby presented a garden tea service among many gifts as neighbors noted Acton’s changes.
The Acton Free Press changes from Thursday to Wednesday publication starting next week after 92 years of Thursday issues. Printing will occur around 3 PM with delivery to town stores and the post office soon after. Advanced deadlines require earlier classified ad submissions and news items.
The Acton council opened its first two year term by appointing committees and board representatives for 1967 and approving routine business. Mayor Les Duby led appointments to two main committees and a revision court, with Deputy Reeve F G Oakes and councillors named to various posts.
One hundred twenty Acton district high school students still plan to attend the Expo though cost per student rose from 34 to 55 dollars. Some cancellations occurred. Original plan had students camping in tents but now they will stay in trailers with six per unit under supervision. Visit tentative for June 14 to June 21.
Councillor Ted Tyler questions private snow clearing by town equipment and workers at IGA and Medical Centre sites. Previous 1966 decision set rates of 6 per hour for frontend loader and 4 per hour for town trucks, with property owners responsible for clearing and piling snow. Council to review by law and private contracting concerns, while other members push procedural by law review and mention police office renovations and Salvation Army donation.
