Acton Tanners won 3-1 at Paris in group playoff action to take a two goal lead. The teams meet again next week for the group championship with Elora and Waterloo to follow. meanwhile Elora upset Preston 4-2 to reach the playoffs.
Agricultural Representative J. E. Whitelock organizes a two day Halton forum on March 14 and 15 in Milton. Chief speaker H. R. Hare leads a team with G. C. Retson and F. M. Gorsline, drawing many local farmers.
The Woman's Association of the United Church held a tea at Mrs. T. Watson's on Tuesday. Members sewed on Red Grass items and enjoyed a short program with readings by Miss M. Nelson and Miss E. Hawthorne. Mrs. B. Mowat won the “Ship Voyage with Soaps” contest.
The United Church annual missionary night was led by Mrs. John Pell with Miss Kay Weadge reading scripture. Rev. G. C. Gifford delivered an illustrated lecture titled Pioneering in Northern Ontario, aided by musical pieces from John Pell using a Spanish guitar and mouth organ.
The Canadian Underwriters' Association cut fire insurance rates in Acton by 10 percent for properties protected by the fire department effective Monday. Exemptions include sprinkler risks, saw mills, grandstands, and grain elevators. Outside Acton the reduction is 8.5 percent. Local agents supply rate details.
Knox Church Ladies' Aid held their regular meeting in the church on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting was opened with devotion and a short business session followed.
Squadron Leader W K Clements is assigned to the Royal Canadian Air Force Overseas Headquarters in London after five months with the Sea F in France. He is the first RCAF officer to see field service in the present war and will bring first hand war experience to his new duties.
President, Mrs Blow and members joined in singing hymns before deciding to hold a hot supper. After the business portion, Mrs Gamble delivered a reading titled I love the Ladies' Aid, concluding the gathering.
Bolton dominated the game with an opening burst of three goals and held the edge throughout. Acton fought back in the second period with two goals by Nichols and Marzo, but Bolton added a late-period tally. In the third, Bolton scored three to Acton two, with Francis, Jones, and Calhoun contributing for Bolton and Goy scoring twice for Acton. Fifty years of marriage celebrated by neighbors in Acton district with a surprise party at Willow Street home. A floor lamp flowers cake and a spring bouquet were given. An original written tribute praised the Thompsons for kindness, charity, and steadfast faith, noting Mrs Thompson’s seamstress work and vast community help. The poem and message highlighted lifelong devotion and devoted partnership.
St Alban's Young People's repaid their visit to the Presbyterian Young People's Guild on Monday night. The program included readings by Irene Fryer and Esther Taylor, skits by Gordon Gibbins and Bruce Pargeter, a piano duet by D. McPhail and Herman Fruetler, and solos by Yvonne Brunelle. A social hour with lunch followed the meeting.
Mrs Max Pallant hosted a farewell honoring Mrs Dan Yantha who is moving to Cobalt. Games and contests followed an address read by Mrs Pallant, with Dorothy receiving an aero pack from Laura Hall. A brief program featured a solo, a poem by Mrs Wright, and a bountiful luncheon.
Acton council met Tuesday with budget items and public notices on the agenda. A grant of 150 dollars to the Acton Citizens Band was approved with 75 dollars paid now and 75 in July, plus a review of the band’s accounts and annual audit.
The Bloomsbury Literary Society held a February 23 meeting with recitations, speeches on Lord Tweedsmuir's Life, and musical performances. February 26 hosted Dublin Literary Society visitors. the program included orchestra selections, duets, guitar and piano solos, a True or False contest, a reading, a short play, and dancing after lunch.
The Forte bowling team won and lost last Tuesday in the Guelph Commercial Bowling League. They beat Aberfoyle 7 9 in the first half and then lost to Wishing Well 5 2 in the second half, setting a league single game record of 1332. Force rose from fifth to a tie for third with one week left in the series, aiming for at best second place. High three games by W Corry 795 and J Adamson 699. high single games W Corry 306 and J Adamson 273.
In Acton the Rural Hockey League finished its schedule. Hornby beat Rockwood 5 2 to top the standings and secure a playoff spot ahead of Lorne Scots. Norval trounced Milton Bruins 7 3, eliminating Milton Heights. Lorne Scots and Georgetown Pirates tied 2 2 in a key game. Playoff action continues tonight for the Rumley Cup.
