The Ontario Commission report shows Acton power system figures including net profit 6477.41 after depreciation and interim bill credit of 1482.00. Total assets 138213.29, liabilities 975861, reserves 76502.33, surplus 60734.05. Power use data list commercial revenue 15556.34, domestic 10990.19, light services 4871.41.
The report notes a National Revenue ruling on Thursday denying drawback on imported U S bacon. It states pelckers will not gain expected support from U S pork imports as hog prices differ by a few cents per pound. Mention is made of Mr Taggart from the Saskatchewan Bacom Board and his decisive action.
Mr G McKenzie presided over the United Church Young People's Union weekly meeting. The session, under the Christian Citizenship group, included prayer by Mr John Fell and scripture read by Garnet McKenzie. The business portion was led by President John Pell. The topic, presented as a Round Table Conference by Mr G McKenzie, was titled Conditions As They Are in India Today.
In Acton Arena the Acton Rural Hockey League semis feature tight games. Georgetown Pirates edged Lorne Scots 4 2 in game two after a 2 2 tie, with late Pirates pressure deciding the affair. Norval blanked Hormby 3 0 to even the series at one game each.
Monday night games at the Arena were postponed due to the ice condition and were rescheduled for play tonight. Players adjusted warmups and officials redirected the schedule to fit the ice improved surface.
Nassagaweya Township Council met on March 4 with the Reeve presiding. It ordered payment of Relief Accounts 95.95, Road Superintendent 275.13, and Miscellaneous 22.80. A by law to divide and maintain the Townline with East Flamboro was read and passed. Council adjourned to meet March 14 at seven.
Mrs. R P Watson reviews the book of the year Reaching For the Stars. The Lakeside Chapter LODE inducts 1940 officers with Regent Mrs Allan J Buchanan presiding. Members plan a St Patrick tea and a baking sale and welcome two new members.
Acton Tanners defeated Waterloo Tigers 7 to 2 in the opening game of the Group 7 Intermediate B final series. The fast paced, wide open contest saw Norm Morton score twice early, with Lindsay and Gildner also contributing as Acton led 4-1 after the first period. The pace remained high into the second, with Bayliss and Brush adding for Acton to reach 6-1, while Waterloo fought to the end but could not close the gap. Final lineups and penalties noted, with Elora Rocks referenced in reports for further details.
The Group 7 finals second game is scheduled for Tuesday March 12 in Waterloo. Ice unavailability in Kitchener forced postponement to next week, delaying play-offs and gate prospects. An Acton Arena option was rejected by the Waterloo Club.
The Greenock Literary Society hosted its annual Ladies and Gents Night on Friday evening led by President Evelyn Pearen. Irene Aitken chaired the ladies segment with readings by Wilma West and Elva Pearen, plus a chorus, while Arthur McKeown chaired the gents portion with music from Jim McIntyre and Ross McKeown, a quiz by Charles McKeown, and Jim McIntyre’s talk on a New York trip before the National Anthem and postprogram games.
The Dublin Women's Institute February meeting at Mrs. George Somerville's home featured a music program led by Mrs. G Robertson and Mrs. van Goozen. President Mrs. Somerville presided. Mrs. Cowan spoke on Home and Country. A10c donation to Central War Charities Fund was noted. Lunch followed with social time.
Announcement in The Georgetown Herald states the sale of the paper by the executors of the late J. M. Moore to Walter Charles Biehn, B A of Toronto. Biehn will assume management after March 9 with current staff retained. The note preserves friendly ties with the Moore era and adds a closing joke about a police watch.
The Lakeside Chapter Daughters of the Empire reports ten meetings in 1939. They funded charity drives, sold Christmas cards, and started a self denial fund. Donations supported the Upper Canada Tract Society Minnie R Moore Memorial Endowment Fund and the Council for Park Supervision. The chapter bought rings for top high school students, a park flag, wool and sweaters and sent boxes to Acton boys. They aided Remembrance Day poppy sales and Red Cross clothing drives. Members attended events with other chapters and were hosted by local clubs. Six new members joined, bringing totals to 64 paid members.
The Scout Mothers Auxiliary held a well attended euchre in the Council Chamber on Friday evening. Prizes were won by Mrs. Wm. Coon Mrs. George Mino Mr. Thos. Watson and Mr. Charles Holmes Jr. A luncheon followed and the event provided a fine social occasion.
Esquesing Township Council met Monday afternoon with Reeve Wilson presiding. The auditor’s report as of December 31 1939 showed a surplus and motions approved payment of road sheets and relief accounts totaling 746.20 and 269.75 respectively. Jenkins Hardy to be reengaged as auditors for 1940 and By-law 920 to be rescinded. The council adjourned to April 1 1940 at 1 30 PM.
The Duke of Devonshire Chapter LO D E Daughters of the Empire held their first meeting of the year as an Officers Tea at Mrs Jas Symons. Mrs Barr Regent presided with Lakeside Chapter officers as guests. Mrs Kendrick Galt spoke on Canada and Empire unity and the I C C E.
A Sunday collision on the highway east of Acton involved H. M. Stewart of Lefroy and John Bennett of Guelph. Both cars suffered about 50 dollars in damage with no injuries. Chief E. Harrop of Acton investigated for the Provincial police.
William H. Whyte of Arkell former Puslinch Township tax collector pleaded guilty to stealing about $5,600 from his employer. Magistrate Watt of Guelph sentenced him to two years less one day in the Ontario Reformatory. Crown lawyer J M Keams noted Whyte served as tax collector since 1935 with a salary of 175 to start and 225 in recent years.
Secretary Tells of tributes to R. J. Kerr during Ontario Agricultural Societies Convention. Miss Velm Murray and Secretary E. Thetford reported on activities as Acton attendees discussed committee setup for 1940 plans. President Z L. Johnston presided at yesterday’s meeting.
Trustees J H Boyd G A Dills and Dr F G Oakes attended the Acton school board meeting led by Chairman Dr A J Buchanan. Supplies were requisitioned and approved. McKenzie sought an accompanist for the Music Festival and reported facility improvements including a bulletin board.
Endorsements from all social ranks back Salvation Army efforts 1914 to 1918 and the plan to cut appeals to one major drive. Citizens urged to meet their quotas, acton residents cited pledge of funds and time, with a campaign to run March 11 to March 20.
The Ladies of St Alban's Guild host a Euchre party in the Parish Hall on Friday April 5th. A rummage sale proceeds from the hall sale. St Alban's Main Auxiliary meets Saturday March 8th from 3 to 6. United Church Easter Offering Meeting March 12th with Miss S Bennett as guest speaker. Old Boys' Reunion of Lome School gathers March 11th at 8 p.m. to aid the cause.
