Acton built a 6-2 win over Elora in a tense high crowd affair that kept the playoff race alive. Norm Morton and Lindsay starred with goals and assists as the Tanners moved up in league standings, while Elora faced a critical setback in the push for a postseason berth.
Mrs Reid hosted the ceremony at The Manor Windsor on February 14 at 4 PM for Miss Mary Shiells Reid and Charles Harold Elliott of Acton. Rev L H Currie officiated. bride wore Queen's blue with pearl brooch. maid of honor Miss Helen Calder in ashes of roses. Reception featured navy print silk and decor. The couple will reside on Frederick Street Acton-Comber.
Maple Grove Literary Society entertained Bloomsbury at SS No 8 Eramosa. Charles McNabb and C Henderson presided. The program opened with The Maple Leaf Forever followed by readings an orchestra Alma Watson Gazette reading a musical contest the play Mail Order Wife and an impromptu debate on a good looker versus a good cook. Lunch and games ended the evening.
Dale K C LeRoy of Georgetown was injured when his car rear ended a milk truck two miles east of Acton on Thursday. He sustained a fractured knee cap, multiple rib and facial injuries and was taken to Peel Memorial Hospital Brampton after initial care in Acton. The truck occupants Miss Mary Cummins Ethel Doyle and Bernice Hughes were shaken. Cummins suffered concussion and was hospitalized in Guelph. Chief Harrop investigated the wreck.
President Roosevelt announces Sumner Wells Under-Secretary of State will travel to Italy France Germany and Great Britain to personally survey and report on conditions.
Acton district Red Cross forwarded the third shipment in three cartons on Monday. The aid lists products from various units including Acton Bed gowns and pneumonia jackets, Nassagaweya Ward 2 items, Esquesing Ward 5 items, Dublin items, and contributions from local groups such as Duke of Devonshire, Lake side, Women's Institute, St Allan's Church, St Joseph's Church, and United Church.
The February meeting of the Rockalong Women's Institute at Mrs. W. McNabb's home draws good attendance. President C. Plank presides as Red Cross yarn is distributed and plans for a Gents' Night are discussed. D. D. Gray speaks on Community Activities and Relief, with H. Bayne and a vocal duet closing the gathering.
Acton Library Board joined Halton County Library Cooperative Association last year. Acton's representatives at the meeting on February 15 included Mrs R P Watson, Messrs Malcolm Leitch and Charles Leatherland. The group discussed continuing quarterly book circulation among Oakville, Burlington, Bronte, Milton, Acton. Books were checked to keep each cycle distinct. Tea was served after by George Elliott, with Miss Mockridge and Miss Batty assisting. attendees enjoyed a pleasant luncheon.
Acton Juniors faced a 6 to 1 defeat by Bolton in Tuesday’s playoff game after Bolton built a six goal edge by the third period. Holmes stood out for Acton with sharp net play as Bolton controlled the matchup and extended their lead with Scarrow Fraser and Shropshire scoring.
Rt. Hon. Sir Lyman P. Duff sworn as King's representative in Canada following the death of Governor General Lord Tweedsmuir. Duff assumes duties as the new vice regal official in Ottawa, with the Crown directing transition for the Dominion government.
The Rural Hockey League wraps with three key matchups. Norval Monarchs face Milton Bruins, Hornby meets Rockwood Bulldogs, and Huttonville plays Rockwood as Lorne Scots and Milton Bruins contend for third place.
The Acton Public Utilities Commission met with Commissioner Symon and Chairman Hansen presiding. The board authorized transferring 500 from Waterworks to General Account, passed payment accounts, and noted an Ontario Commission letter enabling an early municipal audit this year and next. A report on the Toronto convention and hydrant-raising costs was presented.
A capacity crowd of 1,100 to 1,200 enjoyed Acton Arena’s Carnival last night. Highlights included KW Skating Club and Miss Mary Kirstine performances, Sonia Heinze on ice, and a colorful Y M C A Junior Girls drill. Prize winners were named in multiple age groups for Fancy Dress, Comic, and National Costumes. The event, hosted by the Acton Legion, Duke of Devonshire, and Lakeside Chapters of the LODE, featured bright decorations and notable skating acts throughout the three hour program.
A Canadian reader thanks The Free Press for keeping soldiers informed with home news from Acton and district. The letter urges that any missing recipients from Canada or overseas be identified so a free weekly copy can be sent until they return home. It requests complete addresses and prompt updates to avoid mail returns.
On February 15 Bannockburn Literary Society held crokinole and Chinese checkers night. Prizes went to Mrs Frances Wiles and Wm MacDonald for crokinole and Ada Finlay and Iwoch for Chinese checkers.
Play-offs in the Intermediate B Series start next week with Acton likely to face Paris in Paris Monday night and Paris to visit Acton next Wednesday. Acton leads the table after scoring the most goals this season.
The United Church Young People’s Union met Tuesday evening under the Christian Fellowship Department with Mr Mansell Nellis in charge. Rev G C Gifford led a sing song and Mrs Erma Wilderspum read scripture. Dorothy Kitching played piano while Nella Evans and Ethel Franklin sang duets. Mr Howard Switner led prayer and Mrs James Adamson spoke on Humility. The session ended with group games.
The Lakeside Chapter 1.0.C.E. met at Mrs H Helwig's home on Tuesday evening for knitting and sewing for the Red Cross. Group Treas were hostesses, a lunch was served, and Chapter business items were discussed.
