Halton County Council HIGHLIGHTS displays and expenses debate

Halton County will sponsor a promotional display at the International Plowing Match. Council members debated the display budget with estimates around 3000 for a tent display and questioned past spending. Reeve Hinton defended county support while others urged cost controls and clearer authorization.

Night Tobogganing in Glenlea Debuts at Park

Glenlea park now offers winter sports with artificial night lights. Hills are prepared for tobogganing and enthusiasts are invited to try the runs. Park lies between Longfield Road and the CNR tracks with entrances on Mowbray Place. Parks board installed lights recently and plans more facilities next year.

Fire fills Dominion Hotel lobby with smoke

A smouldering trash basket in a washroom of the Dominion Hotel lobby sent smoke through three floors at 7 a m Wednesday. Firefighters moved the trash can outside and used the smoke ejector. The blaze never got fully under control and some residents remained in the lobby during the scene.

Car and snow plow collision on Main Street

A car and a snow plow collided at 4 am Saturday February 17 on Main St at Ransom. The plow driven by Elwood Tosh of Rockwood received no damage while the car driven by Donald John Harris of Acton sustained about 200 in damage to the front bumper boat lights and finder.

Carol Patterson Wins Acton Lions Public Speaking Contest

Carol Patterson, 14, won the Acton Lions public speaking contest at Acton High School on Thursday and advances to the second stage. Eight contestants competed, with the top prize a trip to Chicago via the Lions Club. Judges included Mayor Les Duby and Rev Ritchie McMurray.

Three Breakins Reported Tuesday Night

Three breakins were reported Tuesday night and are under investigation. Ajax Engineering office was ransacked with no items missing via a south side window. Blow Press had entry through a window and the safe was partially opened with damage to a pop cooler. On Wednesday morning the Christian Reformed church saw a broken window and attempted safe and pay phone break in with evidence of coffee and cookies.

Blood Donors Clinic Date Corrected to March 12

A corrected notice states the Blood Donors Clinic will be held on March 12, not March 1 as previously reported last week. Public health officials emphasize the updated date and invite eligible donors to attend at the usual location.

Phony $10 bill found at Eaton's order office

A counterfeit ten dollar note was found at the Bank of Montreal paid at Eaton's order office last week. Police investigation continues. Only one bill reported. OPP detachment notes the note carried serial number T/T 2951988 and the H and B on the Queen's portrait were altered or missing. bill appeared washed and faded.

Accident at Mill and Wilbur Street Damages Both Cars

On Monday February 19 at 6 35 p m an accident at the intersection of Mill and Wilbur streets involved two cars driven by Peter Turkosy of 250 MIL St Acte on and Barbara Smith of 27 Knox Ave Acton. Turkosy sustained $1265 damage to the right front while Smith’s car sustained $75 damage to the left front.

Unusual Mill St crash causes $350 in damages

At 4 28 p m Friday Feb 16 two nearly parked cars collided on Mill St E near Ete gin. Bertha Noble of Lime house, driving west, turned into the curb causing a collision with Mary Cacilia Smith who was stopping at the curb. Noble pickup sustained 150 damage and Smith car 200 in total.

Charge Edict Curbing Disorder at Sunday Skating

Sunday skating at the community centre saw mass improvement after a parks committee edict requiring admission for all entering the arena. Officials cite loiterers and rowdy spectators as the problem and note police have ejected several offenders.

In a humorous exchange the insurance salesman asks how the farmer’s wife would cope if he died. The farmer replies that it is not his concern as long as the wife behaves herself while he is alive.
