Police Warn of Counterfeit Bills in Area

Acton Detachment of the OPP reports counterfeit ten and twenty dollar bills circulated locally. Over January 29 to February 4, two motor vehicle accidents caused 1560 dollars in damage to four cars, with Kenneth Milne sustaining minor injuries. Five traffic charges were laid and 23 warnings issued. One man was convicted of assault and remanded for two weeks for a pre sentence report. A lost wedding ring noted. report found items to Police. Library to reopen March 6 in new YMCA building

The town library will close Friday February 24 and move to the YMCA new building, reopening Monday March 6. About 9,000 volumes will transfer, with the Y's Men’s Club assisting. The board plans to install shelving, add 400 new books, and spend $650 on new reference volumes as the centennial library opens June 3 with staff including Watson and several assistants.

Extreme Cold Grips Ballinafad With 29 Below Zero

Temperatures plunged across Ballinafad this week after two weeks of warmth. Crocuses sprouted and grass greened, then icy sleet and a deep freeze pushed readings to 25 below in town and 29 below in exposed areas. Steam rose from creeks as frigid air met water while cars refused to start without assistance.

Acton district board approves adult night driving class after tie

Acton district high school board, after a tied vote broken by the chairman, approved continuing an adult night driving course as advertised. Eight students had registered. five more enrolled after the deadline along with 21 adults, all women, while some members questioned the cost and need for extra classes.

Glen Williams youth first fatality of 1967

A Glen Williams youth, Abel Smedes, 19, died in a fatal car crash on Highway 7 near the Silvercreek curve. The collision involved a vehicle driven by Ellen Evel yn Sheppard, 28, of Acton. several others were injured. Investigating officer Const. Tom of Milton OPP cited icy conditions and loss of control.

Firefighters answer three calls this week

Firefighters handled three calls this week with two alarms failing to progress before arrival. A car at Canadian Tire looked set to burn but the incident was called off as a false alarm. Firefighters also doused a chimney fire on Obble Road using snow in cold weather and faced a naming confusion at the Adams residence during a water-throwing effort.

Power blackout hits Acton and Rockwood region

A high tension hydro line break caused a multi hour outage in Acton and Rockwood delaying meals and stranding customers. Some rural homes lost water due to lack of electric pumps while farmers adapted by using tractors to run milking equipment. Power returned in parts after 30 minutes to three hours with persistence of the fault line.
