Acton shows growth with 885 new telephone directories mailed to homes and businesses, up from 780 previously. The directory adds street numbers to listings, covers Acton and nearby centers like Kitchener and Waterloo, and includes 200000 new or changed listings. Subscribers are urged to verify numbers.
A letter to the editor from B D Rachlin criticizes Acton council for publishing a sewer by law in three Weekly issues and questions why overdue sewer charges are pursued from tenants rather than assessed to property owners under paragraph 9. The writer calls for proper how the by law should have been billed and notes taxpayer cost.
Knox Church P Y P S held its regular meeting Tuesday December 4 with worship led by Douglas Davidson. Five members James Greer Elma Bruce Don Davidson Crawford Douglas Davidson presented parts on The Lord Builds His Church. After a brief discussion Clarence Coles sang two songs and Loraine Mullin played piano solos Moonwinks and Winter Wonderland. Secretary’s report opened the business portion as Dr Schoffield slated as guest speaker next meeting.
The regent Mrs A Long presided over the December meeting of the Duke of Deyonshire Chapter L OWMF at Mrs George Sirrs home on Mill St December 4. Annual donations were voted on. Lorne Skuce of Milton gave an illustrated address on his trip abroad. A Christmas party followed with cheese rats doughnuts apples sweet potatoes and peanut butter mentioned.
Candidates listed for mayor council and public utilities commission. Polls Monday December 10 from 9am to 1pm. Only an X marks your vote and voters may spoil ballots if more than specified names are selected.
Mrs. Stan ley Swackhamer formerly Gertrude Vidla Agnew died suddenly November 30 at her home in Erin Township. She married Stanley J. Swackhamer on April 12 1911 and lived around Churchill. Survived by husband two sons David Acton Arthur at home three daughters Louise Margaret and Clara one sister Jean Milne Bentley Alta. Funeral Monday December 3 private then Churchill United Church. Rev Gibb and Rev Foreman conducted service. Pallbearers named. Floral tributes from family and many relatives.
Polls open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for ward based voting at Town Hall chambers and firemen's room. Eligibility requires being on the assessment roll as owner or tenant of property valued at $300, with deputy returning officers listed for each ward.
Inspector L. L. Stuce delivered a favorable report after inspecting Acton School. Secretary Middleton noted $60 November non resident fees and a $699.77 finance statement. New insurance premium based on rooms, not pupil count, was set. Various accounts from Acton Public Utilities Commission and waterworks were reviewed. Board approved visits to Georgetown Porter Plan class and vocational Endance record forms.
Nominations for the Acton municipal election drew nearly 1 500 voters and about 80 of 13 offices were filled. Incumbent FE Tyler faced new candidate T Salmon for mayor, with six council seats and a Public Utilities Commissioner contest also on the ballot. Acclaimed were Reeve J Hargrave Deputy Reeve J J Stewart and three School Trustees.
Superintendent Lambert reported non working valve springs at a pumping station and said the cost liability would be discussed with the engineer. The commission agreed to assume a bill from Anthony Hufnagel tied to a water source lot purchase. The hydro inspector allowed two services for the Anglican Church and Parish Hall at a church rate. Mayor Tyler and Commissioner Ware attended with R. MacArthur presiding. Over 7 000 apple varieties listed in North America.
Acton police stopped a taxi carrying Stuart Anderson of Toronto who was wanted by Guelph police in an attempted safe cracking at R. O. Barber Ltd. offices. He was escorted to the local headquarters at gunpoint and later returned to Guelph with the cab driver.
J Robertson led Nassagaweya electors in a four councillor contest with about 300 voters. Elected were J Robertson J Milne C Thomson and A R Service with G Robertson two votes behind as results released by Township Clerk L McMillan show Milne Thomson Robertson Norrish acclaimed Reeve.
Nassagaweya Township Council accepted with regret the resignation of J. W. Moffat Township Treasurer for more than 27 years at a regular meeting in the Township Hall. Ill health necessitated the decision and council voiced deep regret at the loss of a faithful employee.
