A barn at RR 2 Acton belonging to the Van Dam family burned down with 43 pigs 150 bales hay 150 bales straw and grain lost. Firefighters faced rapid collapse while residents removed clothing and feared the house could ignite. Fire Chief Mick Holmes suspects children playing inside sparked the blaze.
At a special council meeting Tuesday evening the resignation of chairman Jack Bullough from the Ac ton Recreation Committee was received. The acting clerk said no replacement recommendation would be made at Thursday’s committee meeting. Final approval was given to include Clerk Administrator Jack McGeachie and Town Superintendent AL Duby in the town plan with the Hydro Commission.
Halton County Reeve Hinton returned from the National Association of Counties convention in Washington DC where he acted as a goodwill ambassador. He met President Johnson and chatted with his daughter Lynda Bird, presenting a Red Ensign and inscribed pens. The trip included White House reception and attendance at the president’s address.
Ten graduates from Acton High School join a rising grade 13 cohort with Joan Cook leading the class with 13 subjects. Other top students include Gary Mosales Susan Heard Mary Beth Elliott Norman Smith and more as enrolment grows and a new term approaches.
Acton Agricultural Society directors met at the Community Centre to finalize the September 18-19 fair. Arena commercial and industrial displays will fund a cement floor, with space sold at 3.00 per foot frontage. Miss Acton Fair and a variety program headlined by local bands and TV artists will accompany livestock and crafts competitions.
Acton council accepted the Acton Economic Development Commission plan to acquire about 72 acres of Main Street land for future industrial expansion. The group replaces the former Acton Industrial Commission and includes council members with Mayor Les Duby as chair. Reeve Hinton opposed the proposal citing cost concerns as the town faces higher debt plus sewer, water, schools, and road needs.
Demolition of the old Brock Street wooden bridge started last Friday with excavation for a new cement bridge well underway. Earth from the site is dumped near the park to bevel the area for picnic spaces, while the new cement bridge on Church Street NorthWest nears completion. Inverleigh Construction serves as the constructor for both bridges.
Low attendance at the playground program due to vacationing families and cool weather is turning around as it warms. Swimming lessons run daily except weekends, and supervisors at the park and M. Z. Bennett School plan a closing program tomorrow with a Space theme. Leaders will stage a rocket building display and parade starting 6 30 p.m. from the station to the park with a campfire lunch finale.
Rotary clubs collected nearly $400 from a one day circus stand by the Selly and Gray troupe yesterday. About 100 workers set up the big tent which was about half full per performance. Visitors enjoyed acts including elephants, aerialists, dogs, lions and clowns with two sideshows and food booths.
