First Polio Case Reported in Halton 1948
Nine year old Virginia Singer of Norval in Esquesing Township is the first poliomyelitis case in Halton County this year. She was treated at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and has not developed paralysis. Dr. James M. Mather urged vigilance and advised sanitary measures and consulting a physician for any illness.

Escapees Recaptured After Ontario Reformatory Break
Claude Gamache 21 of Ottawa among three escapees from Ontario Reformatory was arrested in Acton by Constable Grant Allan after being spotted loitering near the Free Press office. He identified next day by guards and returned to Guelph. The trio fled during a landscaping detail near Yoronto Highway as guards pursued, aided by nearby citizens.
